1. BYU is incredibly deep. Even without Clinger and Allen, who will both be top 20 at Nats they get second behind a complete Stanford team. They are my team to beat in Nov.
2. Stanford is scary good. It will be tough to beat them with 4 low sticks. Next year they will make history as the best team ever assembled in NCAA XC. This year they are co favs for the title.
3. NAU doesn’t have the horses to compete. They had a bad race but even at their best with this current team don’t have enough. It’s Nico and Drew against Stanford, BYU and OSU. It won’t happen for them. Colin will continue to improve obviously. He will be top 30 at Nats. Kusche, Hasty and Quax are not doing their job. NAU May not podium for the first time in many years.
4. look out for Notre Dame, Air Force. They have a chance to sneak into the podium at Nats.
Nico has really improved since last race, I'm not worried about him and think he will win the individual title.
I'm not sure about that. He might be more suited to flat courses vs. undulating courses. Some people are just built for rhythm running rather than fartlek.
Nah, he's pretty consistent over different types of courses. What he's really bad at is handling the heat. He's invariably underperformed in the heat and all of his best races (NXN, NCAA 2020, 13:11 5000) have been on cold days. Kinda strange for a SoCal guy.

You must have missed him get 4th as OSU as a Freshman
What a race by Stanford. Those Stanford speed demons will have their hands full with BYU over the 10k distance on the Stillwater course. NAU will definitely be there in a month's time.
Speed demons... Stanford is 5k/10k guys. Its clear that Stanford was way better today and that had they had Ky Robinson at the Jamboree (in Stillwater), they would have beaten BYU by 30 points that day, as well. Today they put 4 in front of BYUs #1 and that is even with a bad race from Boyden (3rd man at the Jamboree). Even if you add in Clinger and Allen today you are only bringing BYU about 20 points closer and its still not all that close.
Steury - the first frosh from ND - is a great story. He was adopted from an Ethiopian orphanage by an Indiana family. He's old for his class because when he was a child he had no parents, was bounced around from place to place In Ethiopia and never got real schooling - or learned English - until he came to America. He ran sub 8:10 for 3k in HS and turned 20 his HS senior year.

Next year won't even be the best Stanford XC team of all time - they had 6 in the top 13 in 2003.
its early obviously, but nice to see Thorvaldson near the fron
It was great to see Thorvaldson, Dudek, Covert, and other high school front runners running strong today. I am glad that Touhy is not the only high school stand out to run strong in college. They are still at it, and they were there to give her a run for her money.
Also, thanks for the tip on Runnerspace. I was bummed planning to read the results here, but when I saw on your previous post that you can just do a month subscription I signed up. So glad I did because that race was awesome. Thanks!
no problem. so I go on and cancel the next day so that I don't forget. I still get access for the full month, but then the auto-renew does not kick in.
Nico has really improved since last race, I'm not worried about him and think he will win the individual title. NAU however is not looking good. I know they always deliver at 10k but so does BYU who is looking great too
I still like the prediction that he will never win an individual title.

Stanford from the early 2000s scored a ridiculously low total. This Stanford team ain't challenging that. But the best team ever assembled has to be the '81 or '82 UTEP team who had world champs on their rosters.

The 1981 UTEP team went 1-2-3-5-6 for 17 points. You think Stanford is better than that team?
With NAU not likely in the running for the title, Smith should give Nico and Drew the freedom to fight for the individual championships. This is Nico’s chance. The Stanford boys likely won’t risk anything and neither will the BYU guys. Nico can do what Mantz did last year and go for the individual title once he sees the team title out of reach.

No. I think it's an example of what I am talking about. He has improved since then, but so have a bunch of other guys. He will only finish top 5 again this year behind 2 from Stanford and OSU. Maier will be champion this year.
Just for sh&ts and giggles...here is my top 12 prediction on the Womens side... this is assuming Chmiel and McCabe are not running this weekend. If they are, I would have McCabe in the top 5 and Chmiel in the top 10.
Katelyn Tuohy Isabel Van Camp Maddy Denner Aubrey Frentheway Samantha Bush Gracelyn Larkin Haley Herberg Kaylee Mitchell Everlyn Kemboi Emily Covert Sydney Seymour
Markezich/Starliper in a photofinish for 12th
I may have screwed up on which runners will be there....
So in looking back...what a crap shoot it is trying to predict XC. For my top 12 predicted, here is there final placement:
Katelyn Tuohy - 1 Isabel Van Camp - 10 Maddy Denner - 101 Aubrey Frentheway - 11 Samantha Bush - 18 Gracelyn Larkin - 9 Haley Herberg - did not run Kaylee Mitchell - 4 Everlyn Kemboi - 13 Emily Covert - 29 Sydney Seymour - 23 Markezich - 17
Starliper did not run
I will take credit for Chmiel though So of the top 12 predicted, I only got 6...hope no Parley bets were placed on that.
Some interesting takes though...
Kemboi - never contended
Bush fell back mid race then held
Seymour dropped towards the last km...but I would say that is just conditioning
Denner - no idea what happened
Covert - I hoped she would do better, but I am not surprised
Van Camp - that had to be disappointing for her
other interesting notables: nice race for Dudek. Dishon was solid. Ramsden I was not expecting at all, Sterns stayed solid the whole race...stuck at the front and never wavered.
I feel Bad for Tulsa. Do they have a 5th runner hiding somewhere?
Malte Propp has a 24:13 pr. Luke Lambert and Christian Baker ran 24:29/32 in the B race. With four guys all right around that fifth scoring spot I don't think they'll have too big of an issue. If they can get their 5-8 to work together in practice, come race time I think they'll be able to push themselves. You have to remember that even though their fifth man got 152, if he can make a 30 second leap by nationals, they wouldve scored 140 points, enough for third.

Stanford ran their best today so they showed all their cards . . . Robinson, Hart and MB-R probably had their best xc races ever . . . Sprout fell off a little at the end but still ran really fast and really well . . . about the only way Stanford improves is for the same results today plus Tom Boyden being up there with Hart & MB-R instead of falling off at the end . . . agree, this team is scary good but so is BYU and OK State and NAU when everyone is at their best . . . those are the podium teams next month, yes?
