I'm not seeing any threads about this, but to me, this was the most interesting thing about the entire race. I want to know why Wilson Kipsang dropped immediately at 30km when he looked like he was still doing all right? Explanations???

Some of you amaze me. I did not see the puking and did not need to. His face gave it away. He looked horrible. Like I would if I went pale and felt horrid. And why at 30k? Well he knows he feels very bad, he knows the pacer is arranged to stop at 30k (and they are friends) and thus will be picked up at such a pre-arranged place. He knows it's not going well and you only have so many marathons in you (the damage is done in the latter part and doubly so if you have the off day--maybe 10x worse). I already thought he was looking off. And EK is doing great, the new guy looks super solid. Yes, you might disappoint the folks who sulk around at LR.com but hey, not a priority when you have to throw up. A marathon is NOTHING like a shorter race. And a rough marathon is even more so. If you have only run up to 5k or 10k you have no idea. And if your livelihood depends on it? Wise move.

Kiovavt, you are spot on! Kipsang knew that at 30K there would be a ride waiting to pick up the pacers. If he had missed out dropping there and chose to drop out later, he would have had to wait for the ride for several minutes which would have been tough considering he was wet(and cold) from the rain. So wise move by him.

Now since there was no other major issue with him, perhaps Kipsang can run Frankfurt marathon on Octover 29 and chase the world record there. After all he has the course record 2:03:42 from 2011. I am sure he can run upto a minute faster than that. They just have to eliminate the celebratory stuff they blow into the air towards the finishline.

Drinks should not be allowed in a running race. The marathon should be a test on your body alone and not a test upon what special drinks you can fuel yourself with.

Agreed. Same goes for GPS watches, shoes, and clothing. Also, they should not be allowed to eat during the week before the race, so that nobody has the advantage of a better carboloading routine.
