I'm not seeing any threads about this, but to me, this was the most interesting thing about the entire race. I want to know why Wilson Kipsang dropped immediately at 30km when he looked like he was still doing all right?
Explanations???

He couldn't handle being beat by a 52-year old man.

He looked so comfortable, then my connection went so I quickly went for a pee and when I came back get was throwing up on the side walk.

If only you hadn't stayed off guard, Kipsang would still be running, but nooo, you had to go pee
He said: "hey, where's Kenenisa gone?!, I better check on him, just to make sure. Eliud you carry on."
At last! That is THE question indeed!
Kipsang is, right after Kipchoge, the best and most consistent marathon runner ever, so when he claimed to be in "far better shape" than last year (=in the shape of his life) and that he'll break the WR, this had to be taken VERY seriously.
He looked very good and comfortable in the race up to 30k where he suddenly dropped. God what happened to him?...
The brojo's: what are you f...ing doing??? No info about Kipsang DNF on letsrun web site!!!

I wondered this as well. Conspiratorially, I wonder if he took the money to race Berlin to increase the hype; but also made a deal ( Known/unknown by Berlin organizers?) to drop at 30k.
Everyone who actually stayed up to watch got to see what happened. Sorry you aren't true fans.
he was just in it to pace
got a hefty sum for pushing EK and was told to not make it obvious b/c the coaches knew bekele wouldn't be up to the challenge and they did expect Guya
unfortunately, he didnt do a great job with the subtlety of the drop-out
30k minimum race distance specified in the contract to make his fee payable? Did seem very peculiar. Though apparently he was chucking up his guts shortly afterwards, so perhaps just had stomach issues.
Yes, it looked very very strange! I'm also really surprised no one seems to talk about it. It looked a bit suspicious because it was exactly at the 30km-mark. And I did not see him throwing up, just standing there with some guys next to him, but no throwing up, nothing that actually indicated major issiues. I can't believe he would drop out of a race like this unless it was something serious... but what could it be... Isn't there a post-race an interview with him? Or a reaction from hos coach/manager?

He did throw up. It was shown later - and Kitwara even pulls him away from the parked bike.
And if he was not feeling good then it made perfect sense to drop out at a water station where he could more easily get help/support.
But I think that what did it was seeing Kitwara stop. Kipsang wasn't feeling good already and there he had the support of the pacer ending and the opportunity to end his own discomfort.

I believe he suddenly remembered he left the oven on.

Where did you hear that he was up chucking? I haven't seen that actually confirmed anywhere. He didn't puke while he was on camera on the TV broadcast.

People stating that he was throwing up. I call bull crap. Dude looked comfortable even when he was stopping. The pacer stopped and he stopped right with him. He even checked his watch and stopped it. If you're felling ill, none of that is on your mind.
And we have yet to see a post race interview about it.
Kipsang is not a DNFer, and never gets ill. It's unheard for him.

You can call bull crap all you want, Scorpion, but I was watching the German feed and it was visible that Kipsang was throwing up and it wasn't just water, it had a whitish colour. You could even see Kitwara moving him away from a bike that was parked there.

Wait, he dropped out at 30k? It only took Hutchings/Hutchens/whatever three minutes to figure that out, despite the camera pointing directly at Kipsang basically forever.
Maybe he poo'd himself a little. Since he is dark skinned it would be easier to conceal and Poo really only slows me down in the last mile when I know I can't hold it anymore but am desperately trying to. If I wasn't going to win anyway I would definitely drop to keep from being the next marathon poop meme
Not necessarily, but he could at least have felt trouble coming. And if your digestion is going south, of course you are more likely to drop out right after taking water.
Has it never happen to anyone here to run right at your limit and have to stop at a late drink station because you feel you are going to throw up and/or shit yourself? Hey bros, do you even run?
