Rupp did the right thing by running a hard pace all the way, and did well for his first attempt at the new way of running.

He went out a bit too fast, and is not used to running hard from the start, but if he keeps at it, will get stronger and improve.

He did compete with the East Africans today, but this was not vintage Rupp, so being optimistic we hope that there is a reason and that he will be as good as he was at his best indoors the last couple years. Remember that he ran poorly at Oxy when he was tired from staying late at the hospital with his wife on bedrest, and then with some rest he ran a great 10k in Eugene soon after. Rustbusters in Europe are often a bit flat. But if he is sharp for the next race, he'll need to go all the way, pushing the pace and not taking the pace at 63-4s.

2nd place in the Olympics 10000m is pretty good, no? Galen IS running with these guys. He did outrun Soi today.

But the reality is the 'depth' issue. Look at the first 30 seconds of this video (http://vimeo.com/40064189) as an example of what Amerian pros are going up against. But in the USA, it is socially and economically difficult to get a committed LARGE group to train together at altitude. What is going on at Mammoth Mountain is great...but it really would be something if it could be 30X larger in size, from which to skim the cream. But how does that happen in this country?

What the heck does a large group have to do with anything? Heck why not just disband ALL of the College programs, and have everyone train together enmasse under one coach (Wetmore?) - 1000's of bodies who can all chase each other in practice. Yes, that's the answer.

Well, IF we did have LARGE GROUPS pushing and training together AT ALTITUDE, from a young age, into their adult life, we would have a greater pool of aerobically-developed running talent to draw from.

Now sure, this country shakes out promising talent from the Footlocker and college ranks, but then the vast majority of that developed talent gets wasted because it is socially and economically difficult to pool it in a high altitude location. If, IF Wetmore was guiding 100 promising candidates, how would these candidates economically survive while training, and then after being eventually dropped, continue their lives while possibly jeopardizing a career path?

This is not some groundbreaking discussion with new revelation; I was just replying to the OP pointing the finger at the solitary Rupp as being the epitome of the American development system to take on the Africans.

This is unlikely to happen, but would be awesome if it did.

The difference between the college programs, and the Italians for example who coach the Kenyans, is that their coaches SHARE all their information together, for the betterment of the athletes. The college system is only to get acolades for the particular team, coach and school, and is adversarial to the runners. The runners in the states have to fight AGANST the college system to succeed and/or wait until their college careers are finished. For many, by that time it's too late.

Galen looked like he was working very hard from 6 laps on. He was clearly not having a great day, but he showed today that he's tough (and can suffer).

PEDs and his association with Salazar aside, I have to give the guy props for racing like a man today.

Don't forget Rowbury is also a Salazar athlete. Did well. And if Levins had to pay today for his Comm Games run, that run was worth it. What a run he had. Nearly nobody runs well every time. Amos today is an example.

No, he really wasn't.

Actually, he pretty much was, at least at this point. They have both run 7:30 and 12:58. Rupp has a silver medal to his credit, but Kennedy strung the 1996 Olympic 5,000 out over the last two laps, to his credit, and I don't believe he had access to an altitude tent or alter-g treadmill, etc.

Keep in mind, Rupp was a 13:06 guy when he ran 26:48. He is now four seconds faster over 10,000. While I'd like to think that this was a good rust buster after the birth of his twins, I think Rupp had his best fitness in 2012. I doubt he reaches that echelon again. I would love to see him run sub-12:55 and think him capable, but his potential sub-12:50 days are probably in the rear view mirror.

For the last couple years, Rupp has had a better indoor season than outdoor. Would be good to see him run something fast, like a 1,500 or 3,000 and take one more crack at a fast 5,000 this year.

Bob has one PR on Rupp and that's the 5000m. Otherwise, Rupp him across the boards and by some big margins. That said, I agree that Rupp won't run low 12:50.

Kennedy broke 13 minutes twice for 5k.

He also ran away with the U.S. champs a few times.

Rupp has done neither of these.
