True, but Bekele was in another world from the rest of the runners then. He was capable of 12:34 or better maybe? I think if you put Rupp into a great venue with good weather, and a bunch of 13:00-13:10 guys in with him, he could take the pace and do the same thing and get the AR. Rupp actually does quite well with hammering pace. That race will never happen though.

Rupp can't hammer pace in the Diamond League because he's at the same level as a swarm of runners who can run 12:48-12:55. If he takes the pace from 2K or 3K he'll just gift wrap a faster race where nobody has to think much and several of them will nail him at the end. He could possibly get the AR, but when people start blowing by you, it's easy to lose a lot of time when you rig up. Plus you end the race with the experience of getting your butt kicked instead of being in the hunt.

I would like to see Rupp experiment with taking the lead with 600-800 to go and really ratcheting it up. Make it hard for guys to box him in and get the pace going fast enough that they can't get the quick gaps. If he can throw in a :57 from 600 to 200 to go, he may sap or discourage enough guys to have a shot at a win. Question is what can he and they hang on for in the last 200.

Well, he was guessing. But in 2012, this from the Track & Field Athletes Association estimated the US leaders and name recognition stars in the 5K and 10K earned $250K+ with the top 5 in the US potentially making $400K+:

Now it strikes me that Rupp has to be the highest earning US athlete in the 5 and 10K, and since this includes information from interviews he may well be the $400K+ identified in the table. In any event, I think the guess of him pulling down $250K to $500K seems pretty decent.

Bingo! Now I don't know if Rupp signs 1 year, 3 year or 5 year contracts, but if he's had a signing since 2012, he would have only gone up and had the leverage to negotiate his bonus incentives higher. For example, how many chances does a guy get to run under 26:48, especially when he's approaching 30? If you get maybe one decent 10K a year that's not a lot. And according to the majority on letsrun, Rupp would never run under 26:50 again. So it's a pretty safe bet to offer a big bonus for the new AR at 10K, but then he got it.

Galen is certainly a golden child of American distance running. He is head and shoulders above most every american. the fact that he is so consistently a winner on the domestic circuit should be a great indication of this. After all, even the most profilic american distance runners who are considered world class in their own events are often beaten by other americans.

That said, Galen is on the same level, unfortunately, as a number of top african athletes. To me, it is exciting to watch these races because there is potential on any given day that Rupp could take the race. I know we have yet to see him win a prolific DL 5000m but I feel it is just a matter of time. He is an athlete in the prime of his career who has a number of tools that enable him to compete in any given race. I look forward to seeing him compete here against these top african athletes. I believe his chances stand around 1 in 4 with Alamirew, Soi, Ndiku. Maybe I am an optimist.

Mead and True are proven competitors in their own right who have more recently risen to a higher level of competition. I would be unsurprised to see them run as fast as 12:55 if the race is fast enough. however, I do not see either of them capable of running with the highest level africans or rupp. Galen has demonstrated repeatedly that he is by far the best domestic runner and that he is a class above these guys. So if Rupp runs 12:51-53, I could see these guys running 12:55-57.

As far as Rupp's base pay goes, I would imagine it is extremely high. It is noted that our sport is very feast or famine and Galen has achieved greatly and has been rather consistent. No one would argue with you that he is in fact a very boring personality but he makes up for that with the hardware. He always shows up when he needs to and runs up to his potential. I would imagine he has negotiated a half million dollar contract with nike.

Rupp might have a 500k contract, but it would be a multiyear contract. Some people seem to think Rupp makes that much per year.

There don't seem to be any Rupp-branded products being sold by Nike. Rupp is really losing the chance to make money on marketing himself. That seems odd to me since Rupp was a business major--although it seems he did not finish the major--, with a focus on marketing.

I also thought it was strange that they have never branded anything Rupp by now. Nike are not marketing fools and they know that Wheating and McNamara look more dreamy on posters and along walls, but that is just the retail side of it. Every running kid knows who Rupp is and knows that he is winning medals and setting AR's. I would have thought a Rupp shoe line would have done very well at the high school/young runner level, but who knows, maybe all the viral hate on letsrun has them second guessing that. He doesn't do FB or Twitter any longer so maybe they just decided to keep their heads down and get the job done. We do know that they tried to market his 10K AR with a video (in Palo Alto) and that backfired because Solinsky won. I'm not sure what would have happened if Rupp did, maybe a Nike commercial or some documentary. I thought there was a great story there, especially when Rupp came back and ran 26:48 and won the silver medal. Persistence. So how about release that story to announce the shoe line?

Eh the oregon project gear is basically the same thing as rupp gear. plus rupp isnt very handsome so they might as well keep him out of th elime light.

Even if we exclusively consider your prediction in the event of a finish, you gave yourself a huge amount of wiggle room.

13:0X encompasses everything from 13:00.00 - 13:09.99. That's a pretty significant range that includes a very large portion of Rupp's total performances.
