Lina Reifenstahl's Triumph of the Will.
Last watched it in fall 2008. Amazing how that stuff from the old days in Germany reminded me of the Obama campaign.
Watch it an see if you agree.
Everyone should see the recent doc Surfwise, 2009, about the surfing Paskowitz family. Awesome.
I also just saw and loved Harvard Beats Yale 29-29.
For Documentary Fans:
Jupiter's Wife
In The Realms of the Unreal
Lalee's Kin
Favorite Documentary Of All Time: Sans Soliel (Sunless)
Fire on the track
when we were kings
In the Shadow of the Moon
Funny, I just watched that last night. It is very good, I agree.
I nominate "Street Fight" - the documentary about Cory Booker's first mayoral campaign in Newark. Also I thought "Boys of Baraka" was very good. I think back to those two movies a lot.
Jesus Camp was a really interesting documentary about evangelicals ministering to children, but without the commentary. The camp director in the film comes across as crazy, but there's no narrator to tell you that's what you're supposed to think.
My favorite docu is Ballerina, which might not appeal to the boys on this board, but actually has some similar struggles to running.
My favorites ... wrote:
I can't really decide between these two.
Born into Brothels
Murderball
"Murderball" is awesome. Same for "Planet B-Boy." I'll also toss in "The Corporation" and "No End In Sight."
In response to John Smallberries:
The documentary about James Hogue (con man) is very good. My wife is not a runner and she also enjoyed it.
An offbeat documentary is Speedo: A love story. It is about a guy obsessed with demolition derbies and chronicles his life competing in them.
"The Century of the Self" - all 4 episodes are on online:

Not technical a film documentary I know but life changing none the less (well for me anyway). I love all of Adam Curtis' work and his unique view of history. "The Power of Nightmares" was really good too.
Wordplay, about crossword puzzle fanatics. Fascinating look at the world of people who are really good at making and solving puzzles. Features Ken Burns, Bill Clinton, Jon Stewart and Will Shortz.
Yes, I loved Hoop Dreams, but I also enjoyed:
Yong at Heart
man on wire
murderball
7-up series
don't look back
crumb
mad house ballroom
spellbound
capturing the friedmans
my architect
rivers and tides
stone reader
jesus camp
supersize me
so the bible tells me so
etc.!!
I third The Fog of War: Eleven Lessons from the Life of Robert S. McNamara (2003), gripping, brilliantly presented.
First descent for the snowboarders, waveriders for the surfers

"Rationality will not save us"
...the combination of nuclear weapons and human fallibility will lead to the destruction of nations....
THIS gets your attention...
I strongly aggree with the movies:
Crumb
7 Up series
Hoop Dreams
Murderball
Spellbound
and would add my all time favorite documentary:
The Stair Case, a fly on the wall glimpse inside the defense of a murder suspect. It unfolds like a well plotted novel. I watched all 6 hours in one sitting.

How has this only been mentioned once?! Great and unintentionally hilarious documentary.
"Super Size Me" is excellent but a little bit too long. You won't eat at McDonald's again for probably 1 year after watching it.
Don't see "Zeitgeist". It's a kook conspiracy-theory documentary about different subjects ranging from "Jesus never lived" to "the American government perpetrated 9/11". I found most of it offensive to my intelligence, inaccurate, and annoying. The 9/11 part is the most annoying.
