I spent $400 on a quarter-carat diamond engagement ring (which was a lot of money to me at the time). Been married for 14 years. Of course, wife does not wear the engagement ring!

Definitly try rings on to see how they look because big ends up looking gaudy. I thought my ring (only a carat) was way too big for my finger (also 3.75) but I have gotten used to it. But the problem now is that I work in a field representing very poor, low income people and I hate the fact that I have such a shiny, sparkly huge ring on my finger. They always notice it (very good C,C,C) and congratulate me on my marriage (year ago). I love my husband for being able to pick out such a gorgeous ring on his own and am very gratful he could afford it but I am often self-conscious of it because flashy isnt part of my character - so it is going to depend on what you want the ring to say about you in the future too.

My wife has a ring size 4.0

I bought her a 7 carat piece of trash diamond for $15k.

That ring is the joint, and she drops jaws wherever she goes.

I just hope she never gets it appraised b/c that thing must have been cut by a blind kid with MS and too much caffeine.

My wife has a 3.5 size finger as well, and I bought a 1.5 ct solitare diamond for her.

The 1.5 ct looks huge compared to her bony fingers. I think that a 2 carat would be the largest that you should go.

I would first tell you to not listen to the majority of the posts on this thread. You asked a few simple questions. The reality is that it is nothing but you and your boyfriend's business on how much money is spent on the engagement ring. If he earns a substantial income and wants to spend 25k on a ring then more power to him. To answer your first question 20-30K on an engagement ring is not out of scope with his income. And if he prefers that you pick a style out that you want then why shouldn't you? You will be looking at this ring every single day all of the time...why not pick one you like. Too many people on this board run their mouths about matters that don't concern them at all.

In his family, the women have nice rings it's just the way it is, they are FAR from materialistic and donate a great deal to charity.

I am going to look at the lower end of that range, no more than 20k, which is 2 weeks salary. So, I do not think its out of control and to me, it is a meaningful purchase that I will have forever.

Good people who spend >20k on a artificially scarce resource that has more blood on it than anything but maybe oil.

First allow me to state the obvious- the diamond industry is totally fabricated. The only reason anything has any value is because of supply and demand. The amount of diamonds on the market at any given time are tightly controlled by very few (DeBeers being the major player). The actually value of a 1 carat good stone is probably about $1! Research the history of the industry and you will be shocked. DeBeers had movie writers and producers make films about diamond thefts to create the illusion that they have value. Each year Harry Winston lends millions of dollars worth of jewelry to the movie stars for the Acacemy Awards just so they are seen with diamonds.

Give a emerald, ruby, or saphire- the have a much higher real value.
