Kessler is neutral - not great, not terrible, positioning didn't seem to be good but otherwise he looked ok. Hopefully he hasn't properly injured anything
Remembering 2y ago when people didn't believe that science/altitude conversions meant one of Nico's NAU dome miles was worth a converted 3:52. Or that he could break 1:50 for 800 lol.
Now he's kicked a 26s last 200 in a 12:45 DL 5k win, & a closed a 3:48i mile in 55.
I remember a lot of people thought he needed to love straight to the marathon and that there was no way he could run under 1:52 in the 800m.
Turns out the guy that ran a 3:37 1500m as a teenager is pretty talented at the mile.
Only about a minute off! But stifling technological advancement for the sake of comparability across periods is really stupid and a pointless thing to continuously complain about
Terrific weekend for the Wonder Kids from Down Under. Coscoran really surprised going sub 3:50. Nico keeps getting better and better. Fun times ahead.
Can’t wait to see Myers and Ruthe go head to head. Can see some fierce rivalry between Australia and New Zealand in middle distance track on the horizon over the next decade plus!

I'm a huge Olli Hoare fan but I have to agree. He seemed to tighten up mid-race about the 5th lap, and was likely fighting against lactic much earlier than he should have been. In that sense, great grit for him to finish in 3:52-low without too much of a slowdown. But on the other hand, his performance seems like a fitness thing where he seems levels behind runners like Cam Myers currently.
Hopefully he can diagnose the source of this and correct it as the outdoor season. I hope this was an aberration and simply a bad day, but I fear Olli may not be able to truly compete if indoor worlds are on the agenda for the season.

Not sure, but possibly since most outdoor races are 1500m races, not mile races? Can't remember the exact number, but some crazy number of guys ran sub 3.30 in outdoor 1500m last year. If all the 1500m races last season were mile races, we'd probably see lots more outdoor sub 3.50s too, since generally people are getting faster. The main outdoor men's mile race last year was the Bowerman Mile, which was pretty quick - Laros won in 3.45 I believe, and quite a few guys under 3.50.
He won't be eligible for any more U20 records. You have to be under 20 for the entire calendar year.
What? Is this true? If I’m 19 when I break a world record in February, it doesn’t count because I’ll be 20 in November?

I suspect this is because in some lower-income countries the majority of the population has birth certificates stating their date of birth as January 1. We think it’s just Kenyan and Ethiopian “age cheats” in juniors. Athletics has little to nothing to do with it. I work with a non-athlete from a poor South Asian country (we’re engineers, work unrelated to athletics.) His official birth date is Jan 1, and according to him so is almost everybody in his country. Not for any athletic advantage - his birth certificate was issued when he entered school. Not for any athletic advantage - just what they do.

My biggest takeaway is Nico Young. A 10 runner with 3:48 mile speed. Jacob Kiplimo's fastest mile is 3:50, Berihu Aregawi doesn't a record that I could find for a mile, Yomif Kejelcha ran a 3:47 but that was many years ago. Grant Fisher has also run a 3:48, but Nico surely seems on the ascendency in just his 2nd year as a pro. He almost beat Hobbs Kessler.
not exactly related to this post, but because this post got me wondering... its crazy to think Hobbs is younger than Nico.
