Does anyone out there still not think he can run a 1:48? I gotta think if he were to give this event a full effort for 8-12 weeks....done deal and perhaps 1:47 would not be impossible. Can we all just agree now he is not limited to a 1:52 and he could crush Cade Flatt this very minute in the 4 lapper?
The only thing his 1:49 proves is that he DEFINITELY CANNOT RUN 3:48 right now.
I agree with this. A 1:49 is not particularly impressive for him. There are a lot of guys only running around 4 flat who can do that, and a lot of the other 3:55 type guys can probably run faster than 1:49. To me it shows he doesn't have super speed, which is why I still don't think he'll ever win an NCAA title. In a tactical race he will get outkicked, and if he leads a hot pace there are still people who can hang on him. He's very fast, but there are other people with faster sprints who are able to stay close enough to him until the end. If he wins anything it would have to be a fast 10k from the gun, but he still lost a xc race like that.
I don't disagree but let's not pretend like he doesn't have some wheels. 3:51 is still pretty damn good
A calculator that puts 52 in a 1:49 caliber. Seems legit. Also 2:19 1k pftttttt
52.0 for open 400m is probably not that far off. I doubt he could break 50, that's for sure. And 2:19 in the 1k is really not that fast. It's not a commonly run event, but you got guys like Ben Allen, 19yo Hobbs Kessler, and Shane Streich out here running 2:16. 2:19 range includes names like Luciano Fiore, Matthew Payamps, Parker Stokes, Diego Zarate, Jack Salisbury...hardly world beaters.

What does running 1:49 and 4:01 really say? 1:49 certainly isn't slow, but his times equate to 2:05.8/4:34 in iaaf pts on the womens side. Those would not get you top 50 on tffrs this season.

What I don’t get is why everyone thinks specific training equals dropping two seconds. Especially in the 800. Probably could run 1:48 for sure but at a certain point you have to go out faster and not everyone has that. Nico is the type that will probably close in something crazy his last 800 of a 5k if things go tactical and run closer to his PR (hypothetical PR) in that then running a straight up 8 fresh trained for it. I could actually see him closing in 1:49 similar to how Nur closed in 2:21-2:22 his last 1k at USAs.
Nico looks like a miler in this video, and he's a 5k / 10k guy. Hard to see him losing the 5k at NCAAs in a few weeks, but I guess there are some other really fast guys this year.

It's a really tough field. Peter Maru and Habtom Samuel are both in 13:0x shape irrespective of their qualifying times. Ky Robinson is back at a high level seemingly too. Doesn't seem like we'll see Blanks, though. Parker Wolfe would be an interesting contender too, but he might do DMR.
I do know how it works. You entered his 800 and 5000 times and it spit out times he should run for every distance. So it says he is a 52.09 400 guy based off of those times. That means he's probably a 25s PR is the 200, but his final 200 in his mile yesterday says he accomplished that his last lap. I can say with 100% confidence these numbers are misleading.
No you don’t understand it. Why would a 52.09 guy not be able to break 25? The numbers are not 100% going to be accurate for anyone but they are more accurate than what you would come up with.
That's what the pace calculator says it was. I went back and checked after I posted that. No doubt he can break :25 and that calculator is misleading.

I don’t know if Nico and Mike Smith did anything different in regards to training after the 2023 NCAA XC Champs (slightly underwhelming 6th place), but Nico is running at a completely higher level in such a short time, it’s really incredible to watch how far he’s come and how much faster he’s gotten. I hope he can get his first NCAA this year, especially with Graham Blanks injured at the moment.
Wolfe would be an interesting guy in the 5K in a tactical affair. I think he will go DMR and 3K?
There is no way for Nico Young to go 5K and DMR on 40 minutes rest?
Wolfe looked great at ACCs. Dominated both the mile and 3k against strong fields. But I think Nico has been a level above this season.
I think that Parker Wolfe will give Nico a run for his money assuming they race against each other, when Nico ran that 3:52 1600 in the DMR Wolfe was staying with him almost the whole way, and Wolfe has had some really good runs over the 3000m recently.
Off topic but this makes me wonder, could Bekele have run a sub 1:48 back in his prime? It's hard to see him being slower than Young and 3:32 (basically 1:53 back to back) does take some speed, not even considering he might've gone faster with more focus / tries at the distances.
Of course Bekele could have run 1:47. Are you joking?

Was referencing his own answers here, but I guess he was just being modest.
Hope the interview link works in the States:http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/athletics/8439129.stmRemember all the speculation on the boards about his 400m/800m capabilities. Well he answers the question hereWill look for a li...
Interesting he closed his 3k and 5 this week at NCAA indoors in 1:54 for both races. Not too shabby. Could have probably closed considerably faster in the 5k as they didn't start to pick up the pace until about 500m to go.
