If you you have been around and coach you know Vin Lananna and what happened to him at Stanford and Oregon, the department of justice investigation, the way he treats people, etc.
You don’t need the trolls on letsrun telling you Vin Lananna is a good person. You know for yourself he’s a liar, cheat and just a bad person.
My interaction with Vin Lananna was not so good. He recruited one of my HS athletes his first year at UVA. He bad mouthed other coaches and programs and was very cocky.
If you really dislike Vin that’s fine, but at least put up legit reasoning rather than rumors and mixed truths. The man has been a successful coach and now is hosting NCAA Nationals at Panorama this weekend. Yeah so UVA hasn’t won a National title yet, but they have a consistently strong program that has been on the rise the last two years
USATF laid off it's comms and web group, ruining Vin's ambition to head USOPC efforts in Congress to fund Salt Lake City and Los Ange;es as permanent every other yearly, odd and even, sites for the Olympics Games. Vin is all alone and by himself as usual.
Back in the day Shannon Rowbury (a San Francisco girl) was interested in Stanford. When she met Lananna, he put his hand out with his championship ring - not to shake hands, but in the way that a king would have a peasent kiss his hand. Rowbury was so shocked and put off by this self-righteous gesture that she immediately crossed Stanford off her list of schools. She ended up an NCAA national champion across the county at Duke. Lananna is a complete jerk. No doubt about it.
This is a false statement.
Look, I get it some people don't like Lananna - he's too polished. My my boss at Cornell used to complain about his recruiting as being too polished (I heard Lananna once told like the president of AD of as school to walk across the main quad at 12 noon to bump into a top recruit). But let's at least be factual.
Rowbury may have not gone to Stanford because she didn't like Lananna, but she most certainly didn't win an NCAA xc title at Duke. Had she gone to Stanford, she would have won 2 as Stanford won in 2003 and 2005.
In fact, in 2005, Duke was HEAVILY favored to win but they lost in shocking fashion to Stanford. Read was Jonathan Gault wrote about it during Covid-19.
I’m surprised when Barbar begins his discussion of the women’s race with the phrase “Duke is expected to dominate,” but a little research shows the Blue Devils were favored and were led by future American record holder Shannon Rowbury. This is a day Rowbury would rather forget though: after being touted as an individual title contender, she’d fade from 6th to 55th in the final kilometer and the Blue Devils would end up third, 39 points off the win (Had Rowbury not faded, it would have been very close as she wound up 39th in the team standings).
Thanks, Rojo. I interpreted the Rowbury story as a satirical way to make fun of the many unfounded accusations in this thread. I loved that post. It had me in tears from laughing so hard!
...I heard Lananna once told like the president of AD of as school to walk across the main quad at 12 noon to bump into a top recruit...
can someone translate into English and then also explain how this is an example of Vin being "too polished" ?
The one guy who keeps obsessively making up stuff on this thread for some reason:
Vin was wearing spats and a monacle when he ordered the 'president of AD' to do this. After checking recruiting stats as they scrolled out from a ticker tape machine under a glass dome, Vin took one sip from a bottle of champagne before throwing the bottle into the fireplace. Any coach who has dealt with Vin KNOWS that this is true and how it went down and is not just garbage I made up to slam someone I don't like.
Vin's grad assistant witnessed this as he cowered behind the door. After Vin Segwayed out of the office the grad assistant crept into his tiny office and tearfully crossed his name--the last name--off the list of Vin's athletes who like him.
Meanwhile Vin Segwayed into an auditorium to address a coaching symposium he had organized (no doubt to fool everyone into thinking he is important and a good coach). A well-known D1 coach asked Vin if he thought working double threshold into a college training schedule during the academic year is worth it. Instead of replying Vin, showing surprising strength for a seventy-something year old, threw down the podium and hurled a three ring binder embossed with the UVA logo at the well-known but mild-mannered coach.
"Fools!" Vin yelled as he rolled out of the room, running over an Asian student who was early for stats class.

He should be ashamed they are hosting nationals. This venue is not meant for hosting nationals. Hundreds of parents will be unable to see their children run at the national championship. He should be ashamed of himself. Uva never should have hosted this meet. Deeply evil he would hurt the meet and the experience for everyone involved just so he could host.

Gotta love how rojo claims that a story is definitely false as if he knows everything another person has done, and then in the next sentence claims that another Lananna recruiting story he heard about from his old Cornell boss is absolutely true! hahahaha. What a troll!!!

Rojo just cares about money and clicks on this site. He need to kiss Lananna’s a$$ in order to have access at NCAA’s this weekend. The course that can’t handle a NCAA cross country Championship. Vin’s and his fat ego never cease to amaze me.
Word is Vin Lananna is angry again because the men’s and women’s teams bombed NCAA’s on their home course.
Vin should just be an administrator only. He looks too old and confused on the cross country course. Not a good showing on your home course. Poor guy
He is 70 something. On the broadcast I saw him right before the start trying to talk to the men’s team on the line and they were ignoring him. He’s very awkward. I would agree that he should stay with admin work. That’s is his best option at this point in his life.
