We are talking about an athlete who is one of American greatest high school athletes; he ran a 13:37 5K at age 18; he was an NCAA XC Champion; won multiple indoor and outdoor NCAA track championships; won multiple USA National Championships; he has had one of the world's greatest coaches at his side since his mid-teens; some of the best training partners and a resources money can buy. Couple all that with a being talented, determined and practically injury free since he came into the sport and you have what you see...there are no mysteries. Why is the fact that Rupp can run a 2-mile that's only slightly better than what he ran in a 3K a year ago and do a hard workout afterwards is freaking people out. It was pretty amazing to me, but by no means off the charts. I am pretty sure that was a race + workout Farah and any of the other top distance runners could have done. A major aspect of being really fit is not just how fast you can race, but how quickly you can recover. We have all watched high school and NCAA athletes do amazing doubles all the time, Rupp's 2-mile and subsequent workout was no more amazing than the '09 indoor NCAA championship when he tripled, he won the 5K and came back split 3:56 on the DMR anchor leg at age 22. Obviously what Rupp did on Saturday was amazing, obviously it was pretty amazing to Fam and Virgin as well.
Btw, this is not the first time I have seen Fam and Virgin make these veiled references to NOP doping. I say, if you know or truly suspect something, come out and say it, help clean up the sport, otherwise be a fan and accept the fact that the landscape has changed. The sub-4 mile you use marvel at is something athletes nowadays run at the end of a 10K. - Rupp is wealthy and can afford whatever PEDs he chooses, if he wanted to dope and the fact that he loses more races than he wins, suggest he's not very good at doping and could certainly do much better than asthma medication.
