I actually will slightly modify my reaction. I did not realize just how out of his league Engles is in relation to Kejelcha. Engels is right to want to avoid competition with Kejelcha. Engels should be in the slow heat in almost any race 1 mile and above, in relation to runners of the caliber of Kejelcha. I agree with Engels in his implicit confession of inferiority as an athlete in relation to Kejelcha. Engels is a very good middle distance runner in the U.S., but he is not the type who should be competing with the best in the world, and he acknowledged that in the interview.
Based on things I’ve heard 2nd or 3rd hand from people who regularly interact with him, I would be pretty surprised if Engels were “very fit” and in the neighborhood of breaking any records. I think he’s more of an Andrew Wheating type guy, mostly just in it for fun and fame, rather than the sort who’s willing to do all of the little things every day to reach his max potential. I’m not even judging him, it’s just a different lifestyle choice.

Crybaby is probably the wrong word to use. He didn’t sound like a crybaby. But it sounds strange that a professional is pissed he has to compete against other professionals. It would be like every NBA player went on record to say they are pissed they have to play James Harden.
Point is, until the Americans set the bar higher, they will always be second tier in distance running.

as to whether that is, "a few" or not, the numbers are, of the 400 competitors in the Wanamaker Mile since 1926:
Africans - 48 (12%)
non-Africans not from USA - 140 (35%)
USA - 212 (53%)
that barely more than half of the competitors come from the home country suggests to me that Craig Engels has probably not spent much time reading the history of his own sport.

Kenyans and Ethiopians aren't the only people on the planet who grow up at altitude.
How come this gives them an unfair advantage...but nobody else/
