I hear ya. I'm hoping for the same. Distance running could use more accessible athletes with some personality....like Sell, and currently Blankenship. Makes the sport seem more human, less like lab rats and robots racing each other.

If your read about his background, it seems he did have some talent but never seriously trained much, trained well or made a real commitment to training until October of 2015.

That's when he moved to altitude, focused more on running, and became more serious about it.

The guy was significantly under trained until joining Hansen/Vigil.

It's a pretty simple formula -- under trained, raw, D3 guy who was 8th a NCAA XC; and ran 14:36, 29:41... put him under the tutelage of intelligent coaches... get him from random 50-60 mpw training with sporadic 70 mile weeks to consistent 80 mile weeks... stick him in a training group... get him to altitude... and get him to go all in.

The 1:08 half even being in the progression is ridiculous. His college 10k equates to sub 1:06.

It's not out of the question that the result 2 years later is 1:01:48. He already has the 10k credentials to prove out 1:01:48, he ran 28:06 last year. Seems the longer the distance the better he gets as his 5k PR is only 13:49. And the half is probably a sweet spot given his overall training volume.

Give this guy some credit. His progression is not unrealistic. Once he got serious and had some structure in his training the talent became visible. Also, altitude folks.

a much simpler explanation is he's doping haha butbsure explain it away as much as you'd like. this progression is suspicious but none of us really know if hes doping or not.

This seems pretty accurate. I forget the details, but he was on Jay Johnson's podcast and explained his progression in training. His mileage was always rather low and never really consistent, including some time off where he seemed to be giving up the sport. Good to see him stick with it and see success.

Noah is legit. I raced against him in college. He was totally under trained and was a baller racer, always showing up when it counted. I beat him a few times during the season, but he would destroy me at championship races. He also ran some baller workouts at different points off his minimal training. For example, I think his junior year he ran a 2 mile time trial the week before XC nats in around 8:50. He definitely had untapped potential based on his college times.

Agreed but his track 10000 is 28:22? ..this halfM is worth 28:03.. I'm not sure he raced "well" over the halfM distance until last weekend. Made a huge improvement a year ago when he went from 29:4? to 28:22; dramatic but not unusual for someone who finds the right groove. When he rolls 59:38 then maybe we should test him a bit more often and more stringently.

I understand your concern, but here's another angle:He ran 1:01:48. That's basically 1:02. There are a lot of Americans that can run 1:03-1:03:30, many aren't even pros. Most of the guys running 1:03:20 (it's a common time) are more marathon focused, so if they focused more on 10k training and the half marathon event itself, the times would come down. Lots of great runners never even give the half a serious try. Look, 1:01:48 is an amazing, special time and impressive to see from anyone, but if you took the results of USA half marathon championships, there's probably at least 7-10 dudes who could get down near 1:02 of they focused on it for a while. So many of these guys switch to marathon training or 5k road racing training

The simpler explanation is that he's trained hard, stayed focused, and ran well when he was given the opportunity. It's unfortunate that the good ones in the sport are under a cloud of suspicion when they finally have an outstanding race that is backed up by an entire log of consistent training and hard workouts. Doping? Give me a break. His progression in the half marathon is remarkable and should be applauded rather than greeted with suspicion.

So sure, it is easier to say someone is doping, rather than acknowledge that there's someone out there outworking you at every angle to be better in their craft.
