This is just about giving him options. If he doesn't develop the speed he needs for the 5K he can jump in the Marathon. Otherwise he can do a 5K
0% chance he runs the marathon trials. He's a virtual lock to make team at 10k and be an outside medal threat. Plus he'd be passing up a huge payday to make his debut at a big city marathon (Maybe New York next fall).
No way he sacrifices the big "Debut Payout" from a major marathon by running the trials. My guess is he debuts in 2016 or 17 after the Olympics.
He'll be worth much more if he triples at the Olympics. The 5k trials are wednesday and the final is saturday.
Galen's triple can be hyped by nbc. Galen goes for medals in 3 events. They could play up Rupps story while showing boring(by non-running fans) distance races. His name would be mentioned on TV on 4 separate days. That kind of publicity is worth $.
He's got nothing to lose. His main event comes first. Everything else is bonus.
I work in marketing with a major marathon, and even if Rupp were to run NYC, that would not diminish his phantom "debut payout" because that does not exist. Mo Farah got $x for his London debut, he would actually get $xx++ in his next marathon.

I posted on a different thread last week that Rupp had entered the '12 'thon trials. He withdrew well ahead of the race if I recall. It was possibly a ploy in '12, and I wouldn't be surprised if it is a ploy in 2016 as well.
George Young did the 3000m ST / marathon double at Mexico City.
Any chance Kamworor does the 10k, Marathon double? I wish this were more common. It would be awesome to see Kamworor, Farah, Rupp and whoever else is in shape for the Kenyans and Ethiopians run the 10k one weekend then the marathon the next weekend.

Forget about the feasibility of the double at the Games, I'm not convinced Rupp has any better than a 50% chance of making the marathon team. It will take a 2:09 and while he's eventually going to run that, his being able to do so right now in a championship situation is not certain. A LOT can happen in the marathon. He is a virtual lock in the 10k, why bother with the marathon? All the good Kenyans will be in the marathon anyways, his medal chances are vastly better at 5km than the marathon.

All Rupp has to do to qualify at the trials is sit on the 3rd place guy and kick by him at the end. The bigger question is whether Rupp has really done any training runs over 20 miles. Anyone know? If he has, then going out and doing a marathon isn't a big deal. If Salazar has never had him exceed something like 20 miles in training then it's hard to think during an Olympic year build up he's going to have him do it now for the first time when the guy won 10k silver a few years ago without doing it.
Nike needs an American marathoner to market. Matching any debut offer by the NYRR (NYCM 2016 will be sponsored by New Balance BTW) is small change for Nike. They are paying basketball players 30 million + a year....offering Rupp a fraction of that to run the marathon in the Olympics won't stress Nike's bottom line the least bit.

I understand there isn't a big Debute Payout but if he runs the trials and tanks he won't get as much for his next one. First marathon payouts are based on speculation and if he runs one for free and it doesn't go well he won't get near as much on his first major.
