Rupp is the only American-born runner capable of winning a WMM, and AlSal won't let him run one. That's a problem.

this is spot on. i don't understand why more young runners don't take that gamble. people b*tch about there being no support $$$ for guys fresh out of college. well you know what would provide support? winning a bunch of money on the roads immediately after college and doing the training that will set you up for your best possible marathon by the time you are 25-27.

it's like guys are scared to move up immediately. or believe that you just HAVEto make your way through some sort of track-to-roads progression slowly for no clear reason.

Rupp is a guy who should clearly exhaust his track capabilities , plus he has medaled against the best of the best in his era.

He is a guy with sub 3:51 mile speed, 7:30 3K speed who has run 26:44, seriously , why should he move up.

Hall was a guy who ran 3:42.x in HS had 1:51 scratch speed and ran 13:16 as a Collegian, has NO great 10K mark, and folks could not wait for him to move up, because some thought he was a marathoner made. But from what? In big big spots never ran that well in the marathon.Yes, he has a time with huge tail wind, just look at times today , but he never ran any real or great 10Ks even in any of his preps.

Surely a move to 5K and 10K maxes would have helped him, and yes I know what he ran at the half, which is barely an event really it is so lightly raced by top top guys ..He never even saw that.

It's helped Ritz relatively, who was way mroe that solid on the track who everyone waits for the big marathon and I think we have seen that, I think we have seen his best.

I used to have huge debates with guys that were respected on message boards about Hall, I said he barely exhausted his 1500 before he moved up, then he went 13:16 with relative ease. and then never even broke 28:00

Even Webb a 1:43.x guy ran 27:30's

Hall probably had the slowest PR at 10K of any top guy he raced at 26.2, but never sharpened that at all.

Rupp today would probably have the fastest or close.Save Farah.

It is good that they waited or have until after 2016.

He medaled against a bunch of injured and out of shape guys. Or guys who left the event for the marathon. Not Rupp's fault, but don't claim he medaled against the best of the best in his era.

I think his 5000 best is 13:18, there are other variables in if he become a top marathoner, how much faster will he get at the 5000 and other shorter distances, has he peaked or will he get better, college distance runners rarely run 'fast' in college, usually it takes 2-5 (in some cases longer to reach their career peak).

Why the rush, he did a 3:50 mile, and 7:30 3k indoor just 2 years ago, was very consistent in the DL 5k last year, and had the World Lead in the 10k last year... He's been breaking PR's (some AR's) left and right, why would we interupp that?

He'll move up to the marathon when he begins to stagnate in the lower distances, and that's how it should be

I think Rupp can do some serious damage at the marathon and win Boston, but patience is key

The fact that you want him on the roads now just seems selfish to me, he doesn't have to take commands from the general population nor does Salazar, could he have won today? Probably... Does he want to win the gold at the Rio 2016 Olympics? Yes... If that's what he wants to do he should focus on it...

To be honest, I think Shalane is a 10k, HM runner (same w/ Ritz), I think she could medal at 10k in Rio or medal at the World HM Champs next March, but if her passion is at the Boston Marathon, let her do it

How people quickly forget Ryan Hall holds the fastest American Record in the Half Marathon, and possibly has the most top five finishes in WMM's of any American.

The question is whether there is anything left, if it can shine forth once again. If so, Ryan Hall is America's best hope, of a podium spot in the men's 2016 Rio Olympics Marathon.

How has nobody mentioned Chris Derrick on here. I am fairly confident that Derrick will end his career with a better marathon resume than Rupp. He will never touch Rupp on the track, but he will beat Rupp on the roads. That is my prediction

White runner-boys refuse to believe there are any distance events greater than the track 10k. The track 10k is a dying event: only one real pro 10k run in 2014.

The money is in the marathon. The track 10k, nope.

recall Rupp ran 60:30 in his one HM (with a fall during the race i believe). that's a better mark than Derrick has ever put up at any distance, roads or track.

That's the thing about the Olympics, if you want to be an Olympic Medalist, IT'S YOUR JOB TO BE HEALTHY ON THAT DAY AND YOU HAVE 4 YEARS TO PLAN TO BE HEALTHY ON THAT DAY.

So, like, the guys who were injured or undertrained / whatever, it sucks to have been their coach.

As for doing what "the boss" tells him, well Rupp really screwed up by following Alberto's 10 Year Plan.

The Olympics is about being ready on that day. And yes, some luck or good fortune is involved.

Who knows if Rupp will ever medal again; we do know that on his first best chance -- he got the job done, and the only person to beat him was one of his best friends.

I am now about 80% that Ryan will never finish another marathon. If he does I don't think it will be a competitive time more like I have been dropped let me just finish and he will run 2:20 - 2:23 range.

I wish no ill on him and would be super happy for the guy if he can get back into at least USA competitive range, but I think he is done.
