Interesting because that is the strategy mark wet more gave to Goucher for NCAAs in running with buffaloes. It clearly works for guys with speed.
As a miler who struggles in hilly cross, easing on up and hammering down the hills is only way to hold any ground. If the hills are short enough, I can even hang with some of the true distance guys. On roads it works even better.

An "elbow or two" was NOT thrown by either runner. Look more closely at the video. Fischer went to pass near the end and cut in too quickly, catching Dressel's right elbow as it was brought back during a normal running stride.
No one threw any elbows during any point. Arms got tangled up as they were too close, but not thrown elbows.
You need to re-watch the last 400-500m. Dressel ran into Fisher 2-3 times when trying to go inside where there was no room. Then he cut him off around that final turn. Fisher's last bump was perfectly timed, as his momentum was taking him past Dressel at that point anyhow. Dressel was finished at that point.

Multiple lead changes in the last 400, an elbow or two thrown..In the end, Grant Fischer over John Dressel.
Both of those races has way more drama than your average race. HS racing is so much more interesting than pros as there is more back and forth.

I consider personally consider Fisher's tactics to be questionable.
That's because you're dellusional. Fisher was LEADING when Dressel ran into his arms from gebind twice around 400m to go. Fisher can run whatever line he chooses to if he's in front. Dressel then cut hard on that final turn, where Fisher had to slow down significantly on the inside. Didn't matter though, even with with his momentum killed; just too much speed. You see that knee lift with 80m to go?
