You all miss the boat on this. First and foremost, have your facts before you comment. For anyone who is interested in history of societies outside the running world : Gladiator is \"based\" on actual historical events. Emperor Commodus (where we got the term commode for toilets) from what is recorded as being the first emperor to single-handley ruining the Roman Empire, was killed by a gladiator. He was one of two emperors that fought as a gladiator. Emperor Caligula is claimed by some historical experts as being the only emperor to compete as a gladiator. However, Maximus Decimus was in fact, an actual name of a gladiator. He was not a big deal like the movie depicts. He was good, but his record indicates that he was killed after a long time as a gladiator, but not against an emperor. He is recorded as defying the emperor in several occasions, and thereby winning the hearts of many that despised the emperor. He did not fight the emperor.
Braveheart, is similar, in that a person did fight for their beliefs, and did, in fact die in vain. William Wallce is a true hero who was offered the throne of Scotland in return of throwing down his arms and joining the English. He defied them, and fought for freedom for Scotland, and died as a result. All the other stuff is for the movies ie. the pretty princess from france, etc..
