I don’t know who would have been worse had they won- Jakob or Kerr. Both seem like insufferable, arrogant prîcks. Winning would have boosted that into turbo mode.
confidence is required to put yourself in the mix at that level and the line between confidence and arrogance is pretty thin. Id even say Hocker has some arrogance about him. Nuguse is pretty unique among top 1500 competitors in that i dont think hes very arrogant.
There's actually a huge difference between confidence and arrogance. And confidence is not what the post refers to. The American Nuguse is an outlier.
Periodic reminder that, while there's actually no "god," god-belief is VERY real.
And history has shown repeatedly that god-belief can empower people to do extraordinary things.
If God doesn't exist then why did Cole Hocker win gold? Let the adults do the talking here.
Cole may well have been helped by god-belief!
But I suppose your point is well taken. Maybe we shouldn't be discussing "God" and Santa Claus and the tooth fairy and other fairy tales--leave those to the kids.
Given how he felt after losing the 3k against Fisher despite going under the old WR, I think there’s a good chance he did care. Not that that’s a bad thing, on the contrary, to be as successful as him (or Jakob/Kerr/Nuguse), losing the most meaningless footrace against a friend across a parking lot has to matter, just because they’re that competitive.
don't worry, every dog has its day. a fluke result which has 0% chance of happening again
I don't get the people who think Hocker's win was a fluke. Surely I'm not alone in that I wasn't surprised when he won? Not to say he was my #1 pre-race favorite, but definitely not surprised. I would have put the likelihood of his winning at 20-30% prior to the final.
And as for it never happening again...why not? If he'd won Gold in some kind of bizarre race a la Centro, then you might have a case. But he won a fast race in good conditions, with all the big names present and healthy - no reason it couldn't happen again.
