Doing double-threshold without lactates is DUMB.
Agreed - need to be VERY conservative (and ideally solo) if not using the meter to determine actual lactate levels - which requires some experience and knowledge to do properly. Too many people want to cut corners (running too fast) as they don't have the patience to allow the process to develop. This is a long-term process if it is to be beneficial. Too many coaches and athletes want to see results from double T quickly, and that is entirely NOT the point.
Daniels's cruise intervals are a similar construct to the threshold in double T, and might be more appropriate for the HS community than poorly organized double T days. Besides, breaking these 400m reps into sets defeats the purpose of endurance development and encourages running them too fast. Yes, most people should leave well enough alone if it isn't going to be done properly. Group training - which predominates in HS and College settings - is only going to make managing the individual intensity even more difficult.
