you have to be kidding. US record is the NR, AR includes mexico and Canada. you must surely know that?
He means AR—-American record, meaning the US record. I was translating for you. This has nothing to do with my knowledge. You can question his if you want.
2:06:05, seconds under his 2018 PR from Prague. Mantz will challenge him until mile 23, and handily out-grimace him, but Rupp will eventually pull away for top American.

The context is of Kannouchi and so it would be natural to think AR = American Record when you're talking about another American breaking it. Always bring the context along.

I wonder if Mantz' style of running isn't a good fit for the marathon. He's very bouncy and runs with so much body movement - I'm not sure how to describe it. His style just looks like he uses so much energy that I wonder if he can carry it through an entire marathon. I hope he can turn into a great marathoner but I have my doubts. Anybody else notice this?
Best of luck to Rupp. If he has issues it might be the end of his career but I hope he can make the USA team and go to Paris.

As I said, Conner is a better marathoner now than Galen is, and he has a tremendous amount of grit and focus, so he can run a marathon as fast as 2:06 eventually. But he probably will not run faster than 2:07:30 tomorrow.
I think the fact he's optimistic is about the best sign we could get. I think he knows he's not challenging for the win with a 2:01 guy, but given that he's gotten the best training he's had in a long time, I expect a good race from him, 2:06:30-2:07:30.
It's gonna be fun seeing him and Mantz against each other. I've got Rupp over Mantz, but I'd love to see Mantz with a big PR and a win over Rupp.
You just can't predict how older runners will do in any given marathon, because they always say that they are doing great beforehand and tell us how they were running through an injury afterward.
