Natalie Cook “not allowed” to post on Strava?

That’s true - I didn’t consider the security aspect of it. I agree that it makes a lot more sense than just hiding workouts.

Our team allows it, but I can understand not permitting it.

1) In general, social media (even some apps) is a cancer, esp with the younger generations. Even for those who able to self-regulate and discern truth well, it can be the source of significant distraction.

2) Even if you have the comments disabled, people irl can see it and question the work. This can greatly undermine the confidence in the training, program, etc, which is essential for one to perform their best.

I don't think it has anything to do with "trade secrets". Technology can be so great and so harmful at the same time. The awesome advancements that allow for nuclear energy also created the nuclear bomb. People have to have the capacity to wield it well, and most don't.

I would like to have seen her reaction when she found out that she is now in the same conference as Oklahoma State.

Professionals and organizations in all fields frown upon a heavy social media presence unless it adds to the central mission. If you need it to promote the organization, your career or endorsements it can be beneficial. (If so, there are platforms much more beneficial than Strava.) If not, then it's dead weight, more likely to be a distraction and give competitors, media, or unbalanced people negative ammunition to do you harm.

Yeah it’s weird. If coaches are going to copy them….then well they already messed up because they won’t even be doing workouts on the same days.

Also Brosnan still knew some of us posted on Strava this year. I know a few of us did still. Not all coaches care that much.

its not so much that you would copy them day to day, but you might analyze them over a long period of time and copy the entire program in the future.

I could see this being a reason for some, but not all. In general, it's just not healthy for the coach or athletes to deal with the scrutiny on a day to day basis. There are people out there who will question everything. People who don't have a clue. Not everybody is good at filtering the good from the bad.

It has nothing to do with it. It's especially smart for a coach to ask a woman not to do it. Look at all of the stalkerish-type of people that are on this forum. There's more than a few that post here that probably try to seek out women while they're running.

Perhaps it is more to keep the athletes from "doing it for Strava". Perhaps it inculcates more introspection and focus. Good rule.

im not sure how the whole private profile thing works, but can't they let the women keep profiles private and only let people they know follow them?

Some of the local hobbyjoggers keep theirs private so others can't pry into their training for their bullsheet 2:40 marathon.

If your training shows you getting injured then letsrun blows up about it, you might get mentally caught up in that. Especially for someone who's more injury prone.

I have several former athletes that are currently running in college. Some are allowed to post on strava and some are not. Some are actually expected to post on strava so that the coach can monitor their running. A couple of the boys have had their coaches tell them they are not allowed to post specifically so that no one can see what workouts they are doing. They even told me they aren't allowed to tell anyone what workouts they are doing. Many college coaches are very insecure. Some coaches may have other reasons, but it is 100% true that many coaches are trying to keep people from seeing their training.

There are no secrets. Hard work combined with rest, proper nutrition, staying healthy and good genes.

The coaches that do this have no brains.

Think about the positives of having your athletes posting... All of your potential recruits can follow them, and can see if the workouts, mileage, routes, etc. are appealing. You can have random high school kids follow your athletes, helping to promote the program. For alumni or adult fans, seeing what the current team is up to every day makes it a lot more personable and makes them much more likely to donate $.

At what point are we going to realize that workouts aren’t the thing that makes a star a star. No I’m not talking drugs
