3:36 from the front is not a jog for Teare. He's not that good. I don't think he'll ever make a World or Olympic final in the 1500. The game at that level is well beyond Teare's skillset. He could make a 5000 final but will need luck. But it won't be this year, he's not getting top 3 at USAs, the competition is way too good for him.
I agree with you in theory but Gregorek made a world final & Teare > Gregorek so you never know. Sam Parsons made a world final, right?
Oh wait, didn't WA just get rid of time qualifiers? YOu can't get lucky anymore.
Exactly. There's more chance in the 5000. I think he could be top 8 in a heat to make the final just because the top talent in that event is clustered around two countries which weakens the field. In the 1500, the talent is more widely spread
I don't know a whole lot about Centro's kicking ability (I know it was said to be fierce very recently), but can he really outkick Hobbs and Hocker after all his injuries and his relative age? I get he's really the best at this stuff, but Hocker two years ago was absolutely dangerous and I'm almost entirely sure that kick is back. As for Hobbs, I can see him being in danger of missing out because of his lack of experience in rounds, but that 3:32 does mean he's gotta be pretty strong.
Call me uneducated, but I think Centrowitz just doesn't have much of a shot.
Note: Discussion of Nuguse has been excluded because, come on, even if he doesn't win he's certainly not falling outside the top 3.
You are correct. If it went really slow, you’d favor Green, Hocker, Kessler and Waskom not Centro. But Nuguse has no reason to jog around. Kessler’s positional awareness was inept today. He should be rooting hard for Nuguse to make the race fast and strung out. He has great wheels but boy does he let himself get boxed.
I disagree. I thought Hobbs looked in control of his positioning the whole race. He could have panicked, and moved to the outside on the final bend, but he hugged the rail knowing that others would push for the outside and space would open up infront of him. The moment it did, he found it immediately. That's not inept, it's confidence in his tactics. You're only boxed if you're not in a position to respond to moves, but he was.
I can’t say for certain what Teare has done for training the last year but Drew Hunter is on Strava. Hunter is clearly training like a 1500m guy. Moderate mileage. More emphasis on speed and changing gears. Teare is likely training like a 5,000m guy. From what I’ve seen from Jerry’s training, there is bigger emphasis on strength than speed. That was the difference in the last 100m. The difference was marginal, a few hundredths, but it’s the difference between making a final (and team) and not.

Just my two-pence, of course.
He didnt panic and certainly got away with it. But if he tries that in a Worlds heat i dont like the chances of success. It did open up for him, but mostly because several athletes really died (Birnbaum, Comber). The better the fields get the less possibility of doing that sort of tactic in a slow prelim.
Wouldn't say your uneducated you bring up a fair point. I will say that age has become less of a factor and especially for centro. Not putting all my faith in centro but he def should not be counted out; he almost had the title in 2021 and he is a rll competitor in championship environments.
Would have been nice for USATF to have implemented the non-time qualifier rules. You’d have Thompson, Engels, and Teare in the Final. Much more exciting.
How did he win it last year? Drew Hunter isn't very good at the 1500 and has no chance of winning yet he beat Cooper today.
Drew Hunter is very good at the 1500. He just doesn’t meet the unrealistic expectations of the people that were salivating over him when he was in high school.
I haven't seen Drew Hunter close that well (sub-41) in a long time. That is good to see. He's still a 5000m guy but doesn't see it himself. Cooper Teare is a 5000m guy and that will really show next year. With his 1500m potential (3:30-31), he should be well under 13 with a couple years of Jerry training. This year is one year too soon for him. At least now he knows he's a 5k guy. Kessler should watch Bernard Lagat videos. Lagat would always get right behind the leader or race favorite so that he would be in perfect position when the kick started. Centro has always done something similar in slow races where he could stick. Lagat could always get to the right position even in DL races. Kessler cannot count on getting out of the box in time to win or make the team. He has all the tools now to get 2nd or 3rd. It's just a question of positioning and confidence.

Can we get a link to last month's "Who are your top 3 in the 1500," thread?
A lot of us called Teare missing the team, but I doubt anyone saw him missing the final.
Was it this thread? Seems that a good percentage of people didn't think Teare would make the team. A couple even suggested he would come to the prelims flat and not advance.

Really surprised Teare missed the final but, as others have pointed out, he lacked that little edge in the final 100. Some of the more experienced guys showed up well and it'll be interesting to see how that plays out in the final. I was super confident it would be Nuguse clear and away for the win, then a pretty close battle between Hocker, Kessler, and Teare for the last two spots, or maybe Eric Holt. I never counted out guys like Centro, Prakel, or Gregorek but maybe I underrated how much these guys, the Washington duo, and Hunter could have in that final to make it messy for someone like the inexperienced Hobbs or to maybe expose those gaps in Hocker's training. I still think Nuguse is too good to do anything but win but those two spots are now dangling like a steak with some very hungry dogs licking their lips at them.
I've been saying this all over the board; Teare is obviously a 5000 guy. It's not even a close call. 1500 is the absolute bottom of his range and he has no chance of success in the event (in this country). Probably best suited for the 3000 but the event does not exist in Championship meets. Can probably run a real fast 2mile and should take a shot at the AR before Guse wipes that out.
At 5000, Teare is a serious threat to guys like Kincaid, Fisher and Klecker. Only Woody will be able to handle Teare's final 400, and even WK will have his hands full.

It almost always opens up during prelims. He positioned himself fine and conserved energy.
Teare was under-raced going into the 1500; his questionable strategy was to use it as a rust buster for the 5K on Sunday. He should of ran the 800 in New York with Hobbs K a few weeks ago.
