Teare was obviously not in the same class as the other 3. He was a good college runner and won USAs in a down year when Centro was done dominating and Nuguse and Hocker were hurt. Teare seems like Eric Jenkins 2.0, lots of promise but not at the highest tier (no pun intended)
I think it will be good for Teare's long term development in the 1500m. He doesn't need to leave it to the last 100m. Everyone thinks they have the best kick, but come on, he shouldn't be running a 3:39 race.
He should of done what Yared did and took it from the front. For him, jog a 3:36 and win the heat.
Centro making finals almost guarantees a fast race if these guys have any smarts. I see Yared taking it a running a 3:32 on his own basically and Hobbs / Cole hanging on. Hobbs and Cole both closed very well today. Yared is the class of the field this year why risk it with a potential 50 sec 400m close of Centro.
I don't know a whole lot about Centro's kicking ability (I know it was said to be fierce very recently), but can he really outkick Hobbs and Hocker after all his injuries and his relative age? I get he's really the best at this stuff, but Hocker two years ago was absolutely dangerous and I'm almost entirely sure that kick is back. As for Hobbs, I can see him being in danger of missing out because of his lack of experience in rounds, but that 3:32 does mean he's gotta be pretty strong.
Call me uneducated, but I think Centrowitz just doesn't have much of a shot.
Note: Discussion of Nuguse has been excluded because, come on, even if he doesn't win he's certainly not falling outside the top 3.
You are correct. If it went really slow, you’d favor Green, Hocker, Kessler and Waskom not Centro. But Nuguse has no reason to jog around. Kessler’s positional awareness was inept today. He should be rooting hard for Nuguse to make the race fast and strung out. He has great wheels but boy does he let himself get boxed.
Centro ran a 50.62 last lap to win his gold medal in Rio 2016 in a 3:50, 1500m final. You are probably right, but he is a vet of all vets at this point. He will have good positioning if he is able to hang. I doubt he can kick off a 3:35 pace or something like that, which Hobbs and Cole can, but a slow 3:42 pace like one of the prelims, I won't totally count him out. I just think it would be stupid for the runners who can run a sub 3:33 or so to make it such a kickers race. These college kids can close too, but they can't run sub 3:33 right now, whereas Yared / Cole / Hobbs can.
True on Yared, but I do think he takes it out hot. I can't wait to see it. Kind of like those AR 3K indoor record / indoor mile.
Teare just lollygagged his way through the race bc he’s a 3:32 guy and paid for it. Hocker had the pain of last year and ran off anger.
He’ll have a chance in the 5k tho but the race will have to be world standard fast bc he doesn’t have it yet
He has sometime to get the standard actually, I think he could run a 13:07 in a time trial setting fairly easily over the next month if we gets top 3. (July 30, 2023)
Well he has the fastest 1500m PB in the 5k field which means he's going to have the best kick, right?
not necessarily. woody kincaid doesn't even have a better 1500 than Grant Fisher. What makes you fast at the end of a race is often something different than what makes you fast in shorter distance races.
I think Waskom could run really fast right now. Probably 3:32/3. I’d agree on Green, but Waskom’s engine you can tell is legit.
His mile time from this year converts to a 3:34, so maybe you are right, still asking a lot to PR after that long college season. Waskom is less of a kicker more a strength 1500m runner so he could be pulled along to fast time.

3:36 from the front is not a jog for Teare. He's not that good. I don't think he'll ever make a World or Olympic final in the 1500. The game at that level is well beyond Teare's skillset. He could make a 5000 final but will need luck. But it won't be this year, he's not getting top 3 at USAs, the competition is way too good for him.
Teare in a bit of a bind here since Fisher isn't likely to let the 5000 go slow. Klecker and Woody are consistent sub 13, and Nur is probably also capable, plus Chelimo in great shape and always dangerous. I hope Teare has been doing some 5000m work...

I agree with you in theory but Gregorek made a world final & Teare > Gregorek so you never know. Sam Parsons made a world final, right?
Oh wait, didn't WA just get rid of time qualifiers? YOu can't get lucky anymore.
