This is flat out wrong. Most of them are grad transfers who broke 4 BEFORE going to UW. Most of them are also 25 years old and wouldn't have eligiblity in and other era.
Their mile success comes with a PERMANENT ASTERISK because they lost to in state rival Gonzaga this year in cross country.
There's no doubt NAU or OSU could produce a better group of milers if they wanted to, but they would rather compete for the NCAA title in cross country.
Can you please list the ages and respective eligibility years of all of the 7 UW guys?. I have long made an example of what you say, generally across NCAA MD-Distance running. I would like to know the facts..not guesstimates on UW.
Here is what I see:
Waskom, his 4th year out of HS.listed as a soph? Must be 22 or turning 22-23
Fay is already 24
Lumb already 24
Greene is a redshirt type frosh..no big deal there except for his really fast 20 year old running LOL
Ryan is in his 4th year, not sure how old listed as a Junior
Houser is in his 4th year out of HS listed as a Junior
Ahl is 24, 1-two years older tan a Normal 4 year senior
So, most guys are 1-2 years old, for where they are in College.
At least that I see. The 1 Year old guys is no big deal..as Red shirting is normal..if guys were in the CoVid window..they got that year back too. But this kind of illustrates my point as well, the wild amount of fast milers..has a bunch of these guys in that sampling.Normally they would be gone, pros..or working.
Fay - sub 4 in college in Ireland before transferring to UW. is turning 25 this year
Ellis - grad transer, Sub 4 at Princeton during undergrad (3:37 1500)
Lumb - grad transfer - Ran 3:38, 7:45, and 13:24 at Univ of British Columbia before going to UW for grad school. Is also turning 25 this year.
Ahl - grad transfer from Simon Fraser - sub 4 prior to UW, is 24
Aidan Ryan - grad transfer - 3:56 mile prior to UW
Trippas - grad transfer - not racing yet but was an Olympian while at princeton in steeplechase
Waskom - listed as soph but actually should be a senior academically, graduated high school in 2019
Nathan Green - 4:00 mile in high school, probably sub 4 in HS if not for covid
Daschbach - broke 4 in high school. is not running well at UW

NAU? Milers?
HAHAHAHHAHAAHHAAHAHAHAHHAAHAH
Smith can coach milers but a team full of milers does not win NCAA XC championships.
He got Nur to 3:55, Nico to 3:56, Beamish to an NCAA title, Bosley to an NCAA record in the 3k - all while prioritizing the 10k.
Last year outdors - Nur -3:36.33 (3:53 equivalent), Nico 3:37, Kursche 3:37, Bosley 3:39, Quax 3:39 and that's just training them as 5k/10k runners.
Meanwhile UW cannot beat Gonzaga in XC. Gonzaga is much smaller and has much less scholarships.
Powell is doing well, but Lananna had a better stable for a 6-10 year period.
Ducks also had a bunch in the next years after that: Daniel Winn Colby Alexander Chad Noelle Jeremy Elkaim Johnny Gregorek Matt Miner Will Geohagen Edward Cheserek Eric Jenkins Brett Johnson Mac Fleet
I believe it was Oregon when Centrowitz, Rupp, Fleet and Acosta were there among others.
And MacNamara and Wheating.
What's even more impressive about these guys was everyone listed (bar Acosta and MacNamara) were NCAA champions. Also nothing can beat that sweep in 2010 at Hayward in a crazy tactical race where all three executed their best individual races on the day. Washington did well last year at NCAAs in similar-ish conditions but these guys were all fast and great racers at the NCAA level.
Maybe he got tired of losing and stepped his coaching game up! We'll see how things progress at Natty's and outdoors. An XC team full of 7 sub 4 guys should be competing for the title in the fall.
Might be a little tough. YoYoing their mileage could be a determent. And not like Nugese tore it up in CC.

I don't find UW nearly as impressive because now athletes can stay in college and make more money with NIL deals than they would as a B or C tier pro. All the grad transfers they have wouldn't have had eligibility before, and they wouldn't have an income stream in the NCAA so they would have been forced to go pro.
The super shoes make a TREMENDOUS difference.
And finally 3:52 is the new 3:57. 3:52 does not win NCAA championships and will not get you on a world championship team. The UW success is immediately less impressive than some other teams of the past if their guys aren't winning national (pro) championships or making world finals.
Being at BU yesterday and watching 7 athletes on the same team run under 3:59 in the same race was righteous. In real time, there is no comparison in my book. Yes Oregon has likely had better to end talent in the mile but not this depth all at once. Can you imagine what the Monday 10x400 workout looks like with these guys?

the oregon guys were also on average 2-3 years YOUNGER than these 24-25 year olds with super shoes.
do you remember when Oregon had 2 guys at 3:50.39 and 3:50.55 and another at 3:53.49 as well as a 3:56 guy? that was without 6th and 7th year seniors who transferred in as grad students. One got 6th in the Olympics and the other was 4th at the trials to superstars Chelimo Fisher and Kincaid. another was an olympian in the 800.
Paul Chelimo, 2016 Olympic 5000m silver medalist, tactically wins the event at U.S. Trials in 13:26.82 over 10K qualifiers Grant Fisher (13:27.01) and Woody ...
