I am still unsure why he won't lift with both arms. I get it. You had surgery x number of years ago. You've been healed. Get over it. Get stronger. Stop doing "London Math" to say you have lifted x amount of weight.
Alan
Ryan Hall was a real marathoner and is now stronger than Matt London in every lift. Matt's just extremely unathletic.
I know letsrunners see trolling Matt as the national sport of Letsrun, but he has some pretty nice squats. Not absolutely perfect, but they deserve praise. Ok now go on ahead and downvote me into oblivion lol
Your squats are legit. Few lifters do it with the depth in your videos. I don't think that I do. I was trying to see what shoes you're wearing. Are those weightlifting shoes? If not, get some. There is a good selection on Rogue now. I got Do Wins.
Avoid the Smith Machine. Nobody is going to take that seriously. If you can't do bench because you don't have spotter arms or a spotter, do a standing overhead press. OHP is a good lift to work on. Not too many people do it at a heavy weight. In fact, Olympic weightlifters do it more than bench. A lot of weightlifters do zero benching. Have you tried Olympic weightlifting before? Snatch and clean and jerk? It's fun.
Wtf are you talking about? Squats and dead’s are one of the best ways to develop a super strong muscle base. Then do sprints and other functional ancillary stuff to chisel up and fine tune. Most will look powerful af after doing that. Thick functional ripped.
squats: great way to ruin your knees
deadlifts: great way to ruin your back
there's a reason why everyone in that starting strength program looks like sh*t.
They are strong and drink a lot of milk; they're training to be cows
see how they ruined this young fella

Wha? Look up John Haack. Human specimen. All arounder. Huge benches, squats, and deadlifts. No such silly issues with him. And him doing all those lifts he looks like Captain America

Running actually ruins more knees than squats...
Alan
Have you ever seen his videos doing leg press? He is 100% on his toes, his heels aren't on the platform. He's doing it with pointed toes like a ballerina. He claims that form is better for your knees than squats with correct squat form. LMAO.

Depends on the target. Heels up, Toes pointed will blast your quads.
I'll have to check my weight lifting booklets.. But I think the most I got up for 3 reps at around 227 lbs body weight is 360 or 365 for 3... Or I could be wrong and it was 375 for 3... Don't know yet.. And i'll have to check to make sure it's within that 227 lb body weight range..
Doing 405 at 227lbs is a little easier since it's 7 pounds heavier than I am now.... That 7 lbs difference equates to about a 13 lb difference on squats.
I'm going to try to get this above 345 for 3. I'm going to try to get it to 355 for 3 at around 220 lbs body weight. If I can do that then my 1 rep max should be right about 390 to 395....
I'm guessing I lost probably around 100 lbs of leg strength from distance running.. So I should be doing 460 for 3 reps with the same form if I had done sprints from 1993 till 2015 instead.
You got depth but that bar path went for a drunken walk in the park.

Yeah lol thanks Alan.
I started doing squatting and deadlifting seriously over the past year. Deadlifting is the riskier one. Squats have made everything feel amazing. Just start super light and get your form perfect. Legs pointed out slightly and go for ATG. Chance of injury on knees feels non-exist ant. In fact, my knees feel more healthy.
Deadlifts, yes if you do bad form you are a few degrees away from blowing something out. Good form and they are amazingly anabolic and strengthening.
Good mornings are also amazing. Light weight and good ROM.
I dont even like long distance runs anymore. Just 3 mile tempos and hill sprints. Then heavy compound. Boom.
Ok here's 365 for 3 with a bounce at 6'0 and 217. I'm lowering my weight a bit.. So i'm going to stick with 215-219 for the rest of the year to run faster...
I can't bench with my right arm so I have to do this.
There's 212.5 on the bar.. Then subtract 30 since the smith bar weighs only 15lbs.. So it's 182.5 lbs of real weight for 3 reps with a bounce with one arm.
I did a competition with a steroid user in this a few years ago. .. He had a max competition paused bench of 425 for 1 and a 5 rep max of 355 for 5.. And he struggled to do 205 for 5 reps with one arm on the smith machine. He barely got up the 5th rep because 205 for 5 is the equivalent of 350 for 5 so it was right near his 5 rep max PR... So it's a bit of an under estimation here. Probably a 10lb under estimation..So I could say that this is the equivalent of 375 for 3 but just going with the 365 for 3.
The reasons for that are i'm benching with elbows straight out. You bench more when you pull in the elbows and use more lats.... My elbow to shoulder angle is just about parallel with the bar. Meaning you have to use more chest to do this. Which is the reason why it's a bit tougher to do this with one arm. Even with a bounce this is still tough to do.
If anyone wants to try this and see what I mean then go ahead. Let me know what you all can get for a 3 or 5 rep max. It's pretty accurate.
I know letsrunners see trolling Matt as the national sport of Letsrun, but he has some pretty nice squats. Not absolutely perfect, but they deserve praise. Ok now go on ahead and downvote me into oblivion lol
Ok here's 350 for 3 on squats this past week at 6'0 and 216... So up 5 lbs from the previous week.
I'll have to recheck my weight lifting booklets but this has to be approaching a PR for me on squats at this body weight...
I just saw that Symmonds did a powerlifting competition this year and squatted 360... So i'm not the only distance runner turned sprinter and powerlifter who struggles with squats. And he said he weighed 195 or so in the video at 5'10.. So yeah he's about 20 lbs lighter.. But you get the point.
It's tough to squat when you basically ruin your legs for 22 years straight doing distance running.

That's the hack squat you mean. Leverages on that Icarian hack squat machine don't allow me to do it with heels on the mat because i do them from the bottom of the mat.
