Okay thanks for your opinion. But as someone who has raced at a high level, and I can almost guarantee higher than you, athletes like McSweyn are certainly revered for their fearlessness. Racing at this level is not easy, it is daunting and in a way scary, and it's easy to not want to put yourself out there for others to take shots at. Honor isn't maybe the exact right word, but the essence/narrative of their being a certain reverence for guys like McSweyn is absolutely there and is recognized by his contemporaries.
Salvitore, I have read many of your posts and you normally share insight and seem to have well-thought-out opinions. I enjoy reading your posts. This one follows that trend as well.
I have raced at a fringe national level. Making some finals but never a factor. And this was some time ago.
"A certain reverence" for guys like McSweyn is an accurate statement for many, myself included. However, athletes who are not geared like him are not pvssies or any less honorable. I believe if McSweyn could finish in 23 he would gladly shadow Jakob and trade "honor" for a gold medal. I see frustrated racers changing the narrative from winning to some other component such as "leading versus not" to soothe their own racing shortcomings.
