+1 It's standard practice to positive split the 800, typically by around 2 seconds.
If he is trying to pr that is the way to go for sure. I think TheXCunner was thinking that this is a unimportant race in the early season and he has many future opportunities to run fast. I think this is the case to based on what the OP said. I think early season 800's are a good place to go out and try to negative split since they fit into the flow of training better. I would have athletes have the first 800 be a buildup.
To the OP: If this is a small race with no competition and many future opportunities: go out in 63-64 and try to move with 300 to go. Do the 4x4 and quick strides after. This is ideal for a meet that you are training through.
However, you are most likely looking for a PR at the earliest convenience, so you could also just go out there and try to get it done.
