To answer the OP's question, TCU is a much smaller private school and is very focused on football. So, they are big on sprints. But they have been recruiting kids from out of state for their distance running program. It just isn't a priority. It takes more work from a coaching standpoint to have a full team on the track with good 5k/10k runners. So, the most efficient use of a coaches time is to focus on your 800/1500 runners.
Of course, if you are a Texas resident, you will save tons of money by going to a state school versus out of state or private. You just have to figure out what your priorities are. If you really want to end up at UT or TAMU but your grades and scores aren't quite there, take a look at UTSA or UT Arlington, keep a good average and transfer after two years. If you really want to be sure that you get a spot on a team, there are lots of good programs that cast a wider net, like UH, TAMU CC, Sam Houston St. and Stephen F. Austin. If you are nailing it in school and have great test scores, take a look at Rice. They actually have a good amount of financial aid regardless of athletic ability and end up being a very affordable private school if you can get in.
