Hi. I have a surgical consult Monday for a likely fasciotomy and have a couple questions for those who have had one or have dealt with compartment syndrome.
1. What did your pain feel like and where was it specifically?
My problem was actually caused by playing drums for 12 years. I was also a runner but we're talking like 6 miles a week at a clydesdale pace. I get extreme shooting pain in both feet (primarily the right) where it meets the leg. It could happen after a mile of running, or after a quarter mile, or when sprinting, jumping rope, or simply trotting across two lanes of traffic. It gets worse over time, but I can go from a 2 to a 10 on the pain scale instantly. I haven't been able to run more than probably 15 miles total in over three years. I've done PT and treatments for tendonitis, etc, and seen multiple doctors, had the pressure testing and all and my current doctor (one well known nationally) is recommending surgery. As far as I know it'll only be for the outer lateral compartment but I'll know more Monday. I believe he also does the minimally invasive method with the two small incisions.
2. [b]Did it come back?
The doctor at the sports medicine facility that did the pressure test said that it can come back, and mentioned the case of a patient he tested who is having hers done for the second time and is only a casual, weekend 5k type of runner. I believe he also said she's 22. I'm about to turn 39.
I intend to ask the surgeon about this, but is there a way to really stay on top of the repair to keep the problem from returning? Like massages or tissue release rolling, etc? I understand the fascia doesn't stretch but I would think it would be good to give it some regular pressure to allow some mobility and/or scar tissue release.
Any info you can provide would be greatly appreciated. The three podiatrists I've been to (and two others I've contacted that are also drummers) all agree this was drumming related, and none had ever seen it before so I imagine this is a pretty unique case.
