I'm a 55 year old male and have been running intermittently for 6 years or so, without a serious training program. I've run five half-marathons, best time 1:48, and decided about 4 months ago to try to train for a marathon (based on Hal Higdon Novice 2 program online). I've been running 30-40 miles a week and have been building up the long slow runs on weekends over the past few months. Last Saturday I ran 20 miles at a steady 9:08 pace and felt comfortable at the end. I had my eye on a marathon three weeks after that and decided to do one more full week of training and then taper the last two weeks. Then this Saturday, I tried a 21 mile run, the same pace, even a little slower than the week before, and felt like I was suffocating at about mile 17. It was more humid than the week before, but not much. I finished the run but I was a mess. Now I'm not sure if I should put in another month of training before racing. Or is it normal not being certain what to expect from your body when sign up for a race?
Thanks for any advice.
