So I have been told that me, and my assistant coaches can NOT run with an individual athlete at a practice as that would violate a school policy of one-on-one contact. As a teacher, it's acceptable to help an individual student in the classroom one-on-one as long as the door is open. How they don't see that there is no door to keep open or closed when running outside at our track, in our down, or park is beyond me.
The other day eight guys showed up for a summer run along with three adult coaches. Everyone started together and stayed together for about two miles. Then the younger and less experienced runners slowly dropped off the 7:00 minute pace on a warm and humid evening. Needless to say, it wasn't long and there weren't options for the three coaches (who also have varied fitness levels) to avoid running along with a single runner without purposely running a little ahead or behind the high school runners. It just seems silly that we as coaches can't run along with and encourage kids that fall off pace, or need to stop and walk, tie their shoe, etc.
Has anyone had to deal with such policies and has anyone found language that allows coaches to actually be able to run with/bike with/coach these kids once they no longer are running in a group?
