Back when I use to run 35 miles a week, I could barely break 19:59 5k and could barely break a 5:35 mile.
When I quit running in got into basketball for just a season if that, at the time my 5k pace was probably a 25minute 5k.. How ever the basketball training alone, allowed me to run a 5:20 on the track. My fastest time ever. My core felt more muscular, I felt super explosive and yet I had no endurance training. I was skeptical of my endurance so I decided to run 12 or 13 laps comfortably and I completed them in 20:40. I also noticed that running slow at prescribed training paces during 5:20 pace actually make me slower at the mile. One day I was able to 5:00 on the treadmill, and then soon as I decided I wanted to start training as per the rules prescribe in all the training books at 8:30~8:45 pace via 3 miles a day 3 days a week while still playing basketball. I got back on the treadmill and I could hardly run a 5:25. Now I am so confused on what to do, my body responds really well to explosive training and it also carries over to long distance how ever, I can not explosive train all the way to a 12/13 minute 5k? or can I? Does anyone have any advice on what training plan I should follow. I still get gains running slow but not like I do with just a couple hours of basketball 3-4 days a week. Is there a way I should mix the two. I'm completely lost and confused because this endurance training of running slow to get fast has not worked for me. It's been run and compete explosive in other sports and kill your PR in the mile and even 5k on the treadmill I had a few 17:00 5ks. Everything is so contradicting for me. Yet I keep googling and I see no one with the same results or any plans out there for people like me.
So if anyone has some advice, and also let me know what my running/training plan should be because I still want to play basketball and I still want to run 5ks but this time faster than 20minutes. I don't think I will ever go back slow running for 35 miles per week. I feel like I need 50% slow, 50% explosive or something, so run for instance 15 miles slow and 15miles of leg work strides basketball weights explosive fast stuff. I unno.
