This post could be long but I’ll try to keep it short. The main problem is my friends and I are having a disagreement on how I should train this year. I believe I should peak at 38 mpw with a slow buildup and they believe I’d be better off at 50mpw with a faster buildup. Now for the background to help me decide what I should do(skip this part if uninterested)
I’m a high school freshman going into track coming off the worst cross season ever. 5’11 135 pounds, skinny build.
In middle school I was a very good runner, 7th grade I did not train but more so did what coach said and ran not bad times(12:20, 5:19, 2:34) in 8th grade I decided to be better so everyday after practice I would do 1/3 things
1.400s w 400 recovery
2. 2 miles all out x2
3. Hill repeats
And surprisingly enough it worked great and I ran 11:06, 5:03, and 2:13 off of maybe 17mpw avergage. But in high school cross it went bad. My coach had my body destroyed and I ran a measley 17:51(second meet) and ran 19:36 at districts. I had ran 50mpw for the 4 weeks before districts and felt horrible and broken down.
Back to the main topic, how should I do my training? I think I should feel fresher and go back to what worked in middle school but add in a base(something I never did) and then reduce the hard workouts everyday, my teammates think I should do the same thing everyone from my school has done for 20 years.
Any advice would be much appreciated
