below men's list.
if I was to rank women, certainly Paula 2h15 would be first. Joan benoit's Olympic Gold, and Keitany 2h17 in London would be there too. Ingrid Kristiansen record from 1985 as well.
honourable mentions:
- Lopes 1984
- Steve Jones 2h07 with 61.40 half
- Derek Clayton WRs in 67 & 69
- KK beats Tergat and Haile and sets new WR in 2005
10. Eliud Kipchoge runs 2h04'00 in Berlin with insoles coming out of his shoes.
9. Haile WR in Berlin 2008 (the 2h04 barrier is gone!)
8. Kenenisa Bekele 2h03'03 in Berlin 2016 after an incredible HM split of 61'11.
7. Ronaldo da Costa WR in Berlim 98. Maybe the most surprising WR ever and an astonishing HM split of 61'23 from halfway to finish.
6. Geoffrey Mutai groundbreaking performance in Boston 2011 (as windy as it was this was the fastest ever HM split 61'04" and he also ran close to 28 flat in that race for a 10k segment).
5. Geoffrey Mutai 2h05 run in New York 2011. How fast he would have run on a flat marathon that day?
4. Dennis Kimmetto splits a 61'12 second half marathon (with a 14'09 5k) and sets the current WR
3. Samuel Wanjiru legendary Olympic Gold in Beijing 2008
2. Eliud Kipchoge runs 2h03'05 CR in London closing incredible fast after suicidal 28'37" opening 10k
1. Abebe Bikila runs a 2h15 Olympic Gold barefoot in 1960
great list. Although I might swap out either da Costa's or Kipchoge Berlin runs for Kipsang's 2013 Berlin WR. Or his London 2014 CR.
Belaynah Dinsimo's 2:06:50 record stood for 10 years. That's got to be worth something.

Top 2, I totally agree. Unpaced races with nearly super human performances. I would put Bikila up in third, remove Kipchoge's run due to pacers. That leaves Steve Jones in Chicago. I don't think it was paced, I think it was a WR, but I'm not sure it's in top 5.
I might have to put Mutai's 2011 Boston in there as well. Must certainly be the best year a marathoner has ever had, right?
