My son can run 4:58 in the mile and his 3 mile best is 17:05 does this make sense to anyone. He is a sophomore in high school. He improved his 3 mile time by :40 from last year I just think he should be more in the low 16:00 to high 15:00s

When I was in high school I ran 4:35 and 9:58, and still only managed a 17:15 5k. Looking back on it, our coaches didn't quite get cross country training.
What's his 800m time?
Most guys I know that run the mile just under 5:00, can run in the 16 low to mid range for 5k, but your son might be more of a speed-based guy...
It will come with more years and miles. A 4:58 mile vdots to a 17:05 5k so not like light years away.
I’m a D2 female runner. Our coach explicitly told us not to visit LetsRun forums.
