I'm trying to learn how to operate a timing system for running track and field meets. Any advice on how to get started? How did those of you that are now timers get started?

You can volunteer at a track meet anytime and indicate that you are interested to learn a specific job as a timer/official. Contact a meet director or head coach at a school that is hosting a meet and/or your USATF association officials chair. It's easier to make time to train someone at a small, low-key early season meet.
