1.76 seconds from greatness?
What's insane is that he runs 4:01 and is only the 5th fastest on the year.
No high school outdoor season because of the coaching situation, and the fact that he's just a junior. Races harder than any other kid I've ever seen.
What is the record for HS junior?

No worries. even the Smithsonian has spelled his name wrong.
Video?
With all these HS kids near 4 minute miles, maybe American distance running has a chance! It's good to see!
Please explain the coaching situation. How in the hell does the kid not compete with his team this spring? How does he train?

The Brentwood kids were coached by Coach Guy. Coach Guy charges a very high fee to coach the athletes. Two of the guys were injured but they still had to pay the large fee because it was in a contract they signed. The two guys went to the Brentwood school administration and they fired Coach Guy. The administration told Brodey and Scott Thompson( who just ran 4:08 for the full mile and 8:57) that they could either stay on the team and run with the new coach they hired or stay with Coach Guy and not be on the team. They chose to stay with Coach Guy. Since making that decision, both Hasty and Thompson have improved dramatically while the rest of the Brentwood guys who stayed have stagnated. Whatever you want to say about the situation, Coach Guy is a fantastic coach who has coached 3 guys from the same school to sub-9 in the same season. It's a tough situation because when you have national class runners like that, the coaching has to be on point, and it's a tough choice for all the guys involved.
I was at the meet and saw the Hasty race... it was impressive. For the record, the pacer was Ryan Manahan.
I remember they also had a lot of guys in the low 9/sub range several years ago. How do Avery's runners do in college? I've heard that coaches are leery of them from the very hard training they do in high school.
I agree with those two boys staying with him though. They are at the level now where there isn't much room for training error.
Isn't Brentwood a public high school, or is that the other one, Brentwood Acadmy? Why do they pay for coaching? That doesn't make any sense at all.
What about the training? High mileage? Crazy intensity?

The situation is a little bit difficult to explain, but Coach Guy wasn't technically affiliated with the school( wasn't a teacher) but still coached the guys anyway. The training they do is between about 50-60 mpw, nothing too crazy, but some quality workouts and a lot of support and desire to do well. You can never be 100% sure what factor makes a team great like that, but obviously what they have going on down there is special.
I had been wondering where two of his teammates were this season (as well as him) and I guess this explains it. I had figured they would have been able to put together a very formidable 4xmile.
I wonder if this means he will try to switch from the 2 mile at brooks PR (it appears that it's possible considering Clinger was initially listed in the 2 mile and is now in the mile)
Most people I know like the Brentwood kids but dislike the Brentwood program. Call it jealousy, but it looks like they buy their championships in track and XC.
As for Hasty--damn. No matter how you cut it, that kid ran 4:00 for 1600 without the benefit of a bunch of spring races. If he runs the 3200 at Brooks next week does he run a national record?

Clinger is listed in both.
