Tired of all of the tech gear and beautiful stuff - just go run

I agree. I feel that I'm also that kind of runner. I have a watch, a few pairs of shoes, a pair of spikes and that's it. In my eyes that is exactly what makes running so beautiful. I don't even have real running clothes, only for races.

That's true. My friend ran a 2:18 marathon in 1984 and wasn't even ranked in the top 125 in the USA, whereas 15 years later he would have been among the top 30 or so

Technology pushes you to the limit. For example if I didn't run with my Garmin and my HRM I would never jog in place while waiting at a red light.

But I need my headlamp, fuel belt, hydration pack, high visibility shirt and leggings, Garmin, Fitbit, HRM, Bluetooth urban headphones, and $300 shoes. Only 7 months to the Turkey Trot!

I remember using the local map in the phone book to plot out new routes. Or just using "legacy" routes that everyone knew was "5 miles" even though it probably wasn't exactly 5 miles.

I'm 52 and I'll take advantage of any technology that can boost my running without drugs. If you're focused on performance, why wouldn't you? Study, research, and choose strategically what will best help you. Simple as that.

It really is funny to see some fun runner decked out in split shorts, matching singlet, headband, $600 Garmin and $160 flats to run 23 minutes for a 5k. Cycling is far and away worse though. 10k for a bike and you weigh 200+lbs...
