Long story short:
Talented girl, had never run prior to 9th grade.
9th Grade (volume kept pretty low, built to an average 25 mpw during cross, but touched 30 a few times by end of season. Was high 20s low 30s for most of track:
Cross: 19:57
Track 5:18
10th Grade Summer was aiming to run around 35 ish mpw on average. Developed a stress fracture at distal end of fibula. Was in a boot and missed the whole summer and much of the early season. When she came back to running. I kept her volume pretty low and did a lot of cross training on bike and elliptical. She was running well by the end of the season. Went 19:43 on a slightly long, but pretty flat, 5k cc course (about 3.18 miles). The next week, she started developing some soreness in the OTHER fibula, but didn't say anything. The following race was on a course with a number of steep downhills. The week after that was our section championship. Also a hilly course. She placed 3rd there, running as our #1, but the leg was getting pretty sore by this point. She took the next day (sunday) off. That monday, we ran 1 hour easy on a flat dirt path. When we got back to school, she decided to tell me about the pain. This time, the bone had not fractured the whole way, but she had classic "stress" reaction. She bounced back much faster from this injury and was pain free before heading to Christmas Break.
I gave her a schedule for over the break that included no runs of over 3 miles, but she went as far as 5 on one of her runs, so she is pretty aggresive in her training. She wants to break 5 this year on the track and run at her favorite D1 school in college.
Here's what I've come up with so far to try to keep her healthy
1. Did some slow mo video to look at gait and see if she is doing something to transfer excess stress up the fibula and looked at wear patterns on her shoes.
2. Have been focusing on mechanics and footstrike
3. 2 high end aerobic sessions (a 4 mile fartlek and a 3 mile progression). The rest of the week is a mix of weights, elliptical.
What am I missing?
