I've heard great things about the city, but I was a bit underwhelmed. Granted, I only had a few days and did only a few of the regular tourist things. The weather was nice, however. Help me understand what I'm missing.

I visited San Diego and LA and was under-whelmed with SoCal in general but found I liked San Diego the most.
Over all I thought southern Cali was like New Mexico with more people and an ocean... and nobody is saying, 'hey, I want to go to Albuquerque'.
If you like passenger and military jets flying about 200 feet over your head approximately every four minutes, San Diego is a fine city. I'll take other areas of SoCal, though, because weather.
At least in LA they bring jets in over the ocean, unless the military is shooting missiles out there for some reason, which is sort of what goes on 24-7 in SD.
If weather and beaches are high on your list of priorities, San Diego is great. In most other respects, it's a second-rate city. Los Angeles is infinitely more interesting.
what was it that you were expecting it to be like?
Next time, check out the Rancho Bernardo area of San Diego. Spent a couple weeks there with our daughter and her husband and thought the area was great. Too rich for my blood but lots of hill for running.

I grew up partly in Poway. I still have family there so I visit as often as I can. School and a good job took me away but I'd move back quickly if the right job came along. Poway/RB is a great place to raise a family.

Maybe my expectations were unrealistic? I was expecting fewer feelings of hopelessness among the residents.
I was flown out there (SD/Carlsbad) for a weekend when I worked for Callaway Golf. Just seemed like a dingy, dirty city. Granted, I only saw maybe 30% of the place.

Ditto on all fronts. Love going back to visit my family in the Poo-way
Was too expensive in SD. $500,000 for a run-down shack.
It's a classy city.
You obviously didn't do the regular San Dieguito Sunday long run followed by craft beer and BBQing some Cardiff crack.
I'm impress by OTC who won more medals than any other country at RIo 2016. But it's too efffin expensive to live in San Diego. I don't have rich parents nor expect an incredible inheritance. I'll have to stay in Oregon where I am now.

My guess is you might be right!

Where in SD were you that you felt the residents were hopeless? You must not have been near the beach.
i was there 2 weeks ago visiting college buddies and in a matter of 10 hours we went to 9 different drinking establishement, 7 of them on foot. (brewery>uber to rum distillery>walk to 6 different breweries>uber back to final bar close to apartment). it was ok i guess.
