Do you change your own oil?

I vacuum the interior and wash it.

I haven't paid for an oil change since I started driving...besides buying my own oil and filter to do myself. I enjoy doing it, want it done right, and value my time. Don't get me wrong, I don't judge others who go to a lube joint, but I will do that when I can no longer crawl under my vehicle.

I've done clutches, power steering, alternators, brakes, seals on transmission and engine, radiators, airconditioning, changed oil.

But I've never blown a tranny.

My dad owned a service station so I started doing oil changes when I was 10. I haven't done an oil change in years though as my dad does them for me. He has a pit in his garage where he worked on cars the last 30 years.

I do change my own tires on a manual tire changer that is over 50 years old.

No. I am handy, but I have way better things to do with my time than that. Also, I have had an oil-free car for the past 5 years.

What a timely thread! Last Saturday was fall oil change day, did 3 cars and a motorcycle. if you have more than 2 vehicles to do, it ends up taking me less time doing it myself than driving them all someplace else also I have a hard time trusting jiffy lube to do it right or use the right products.

No. Because when a oil change is scheduled the recommended service is that some other items should also be done.

I used to change my own oil but haven't done it in many years and a few cars.

The cost of the oil plus filter is not much less than paying for an oil change.

The filter is often hard to get to.

And disposing of the oil is a pain.

Rotating your own tires with one jack is something I've never done.

I'll drop the car off at a service station if something else needs tending and have the oil change done then.

Did Jiffy Lube once.

I felt harassed to have them do more service and never went back.

I have changed plugs and replaced my battery and lights before.

I don't do any of my own work anymore.

Nope. I take mine to a place where they charge under 20 dollars, including tire rotation.

The reason it's so cheap is because they look over the (very old) car and tell me 5 things that are wrong with it every time. Then I take it to the guy I trust who doesn't charge a markup on parts and he does the one or two repairs that are actually necessary.

I mow my lawn with a push mower (self propelled) so I get in a 3 mile walk. I usually try to do it before a run and it loosens my legs up. Legs are harder to get loosened up when you start getting old. I could afford to pay somebody and I could also afford a riding mower but then I would probably start that one run a week on stiff legs and get an injury and that would suck.

For those saying their time is more valuable, do you realize it takes less time to change your own oil than it does to drive to an oil change place and wait for them to do it? And you can do other stuff while the oil is draining. I pay $25 for 5 quarts of full synthetic with a filter. That would cost you $50+ at Jiffy Lube. They are cheap because they use crappy bulk oil. Half the time they don't even drain all the old oil out.

Up until a year ago I almost exclusively changed my own oil. My grandfather was a mechanic and got me started early changing the oil on my parents and other family members' cars. I also did other basic repairs myself.

Last year I bought my first new car, which included maintenance for the first year. I'll probably keep bringing it to the dealer for a couple years just to get my warranty book stamped. I enjoy working on cars so I'll probably go back to doing it myself. I'm hoping my next car will be electric and not need oil changes.
