Cheerleading - WTF, America?

I agree, ditch the stupid pom poms and start twerking in bikinis. If something is worth doing, it's worth doing right!

My uber-feminist Aunt rants about this all the time. Girls today can play any sport they want if they so choose. Nobody is forcing these girls to join cheerleading (except maybe their moms) and nowadays they cheer at female athletic events, too.

The girls that do cheerleading just like to wave their pom-poms, do neat little handsprings and acrobatic stunts, and look pretty. Big deal. The majority of people, men included, think it's pretty dumb, but what do you want to do? Tell them they're not allowed to do it anymore because of the patriarchy? Leave 'em alone.

Would you say you find cheerleading offensive?

There's nothing sexist about it. Don't try to force girls who enjoy cheerleading to do another sport just because it doesn't make you feel right. For some unknown reason, you have a strange sense that there must be something wrong, and are compelled to try to ruin others' fun in order to satisfy this odd personal compulsion.

Not sure how it's sexist... If a boy wants to do it, any school will let him. Some schools have a lot of boys on their squads to throw the girls through the air. Girls occasionally play football in high school - same deal. More realistically for most girls, there are plenty of other options for fall sports if they want to play one.

I love those cheerleader movies, starring Kirsten Dunst, Hayden Pantierre and others and given their great box office, others do too.

You basically did. You said it "sends the wrong message." That basically implies you would gladly ban it if you had the power to, rather than let people be.

Do you apply this logic elsewhere, by the way? Do you think all movies are dumb if they cast an attractive female for 'eye candy' (i.e. every movie)?

Has anyone else out there noticed that a certain segment of the population has an inborn desire for dancing and performing in front of crowds, boys and girls, usually in settings totally unrelated to sports.

If cheerleading is demeaning and sexist, then we must also label as sexist, leftist icons like Beyonce, ballerinas, Audrey Hepburn.....

True, there was a TV show called Glee dedicated to that exhibitionist trait. To each his own except from where the OP was from and he's pushing his Muslim views here. I dare say the soccer hooligans would be better behaved if they had cheerleaders.

I hate cheerleading.

All 3 of my daughters did it for a least a couple of years, despite my 'let them cheer for you' speeches.

They loved it.

They are all a bit shy socially too ... I think it was an avenue for them to be expressive.

So, get over yourself OP. You don't know everything like you think you do. And like I used to think I did.
