I heard once that he would do 40 x 400m...with 400m recovery. That was be an interesting way to run just 400m shy of 20 miles, and it would mean that saying "Zatopek didn't do long runs" is incorrect.
Anyone know the real story?

Doesn't that add up to 10 miles?

Pretty close. 80 laps divided by four...account for the few yards short and yep 10 miles.

80 divided by 4 is 20. So it would be almost 10 miles hard and almost 10 miles recovery/easy.

Now that the math is settled - 20 miles - is there anyone who knows what the paces he ran in the workout? Thanks!
