I admit it. I failed. I tried to use Jack Daniels' 2Q program to run my first sub 3 hour Marathon in the Boston Marathon. I ended up injuring myself after 4 workouts and was relegated to aquajogging in the local pool. I managed a 3:11 off about a month of intense training after finally returning to land.
But that's all history now. I have a new Marathon scheduled for the end of October and I've upped the weekly mileage from my previous average of about 50 MPW (PR of 3:10 from that mileage) to a peak of 70 MPW (about 63 MPW avg) . I've completed 6 weeks of the 2Q program and my legs are feeling strong. It does not appear that I will incur a devastating injury in the 8 remaining weeks I have before the race, but I will leave that open as a possibility in case I have to eat my words.
Previous training was about 50 MPW with a single long run at the end of the week of 20 miles run in progressive 10E+10M fashion, which took about 2:30 to complete. I think I did about 5 of those 20 milers before my PR. The more recent month of training before Boston involved about 4 18-20 milers with a 12-16 miler midweek, so it was more or less a Jack Daniels inspired "crash course" in marathon readiness, but I wasn't actually following the plan.
In reviewing the plan for the remaining 8 weeks of my current Marathon attempt, Jack has me running mainly 15-17 milers for long runs, and there are only two 20 milers in that time. My concern is that a 17 miler with M/T pace workout in the middle takes me about 2:04 to complete. A 15 miler takes about 1:47 with the workout in the middle. So, the reality is that those runs at my paces will only take me 1:47 to 2:04, and I'll only have 2 runs that bring me to 2:30 on my feet.
Is the added stimulus of having 2 "long" workouts taking 1:47 to 2:04 to complete (with true T and M pace in the middle) greater than a single long run taking about 2:30 to complete?
There is also the added stimulus of bumping the average MPW from 50 to 63. I'm curious enough to stick with the plan and try it, but I would love to hear some opinions from folks who have had similar goals and train similar mileage. My main concern is that I might not be getting enough "time on my feet" with the prescribed long runs.
