It was Lydiard and it was "just enjoy yourself."
"It is better to be 100% healthy and 90% fit than to be 100% fit and only 90% healthy" - my college coach.
Unfortunately, I was old, injured, and past my prime before I saw the wisdom in that.

That is good. I've heard that a few times, and I still have a hard time with it.
My big one came when I was in high school. One summer I ran with my neighbor who was a pretty darn good runner in his mid-40s. We went out and cruised the neighborhoods for a while and then ran a couple of 800s on the track at for what him must have been a tempo-ish pace, or slightly faster. For me they felt like slow intervals. He tried to explain the idea of keeping in check with faster paces, but not killing yourself to get to them. "Just stretch the envelop, don't burst through it."
My high school coach had us running everything pretty much as hard as possible. I knew that was wrong, but I didn't know how to fix it and I didn't know how to really understand what my neighbor was saying.
But I'm starting to get it more now, and I'm feeling better for it.
The other way I have recently heard this message is "let the paces come to you." Don't fight it.
"You keep that up and you'll be the fittest guy in the bleachers come race day." - my college coach, upon discovering my "secret" extra workouts.
Slow down if you want to run farther.

My old SMTC coach "don't drink the evening prior to a hard interval session"
Run more.
Read the work of Arthur Jones (of Nautilus fame) and apply the principles to all physical training including running. Completely ignore anyone who derides him or his ideas.
My coach. He said, "Close your eyes, this won't hurt a bit." He was 100% right and I've been faster since.
Use a 3-3 breathing pattern on easy days to ensure you don't overtrain.

And be a conceited, self-centered jackass while doing it.
Go as fast as you can and turn left
Don't use trial and error.
We are all an experiment of one.

While you were sleeping, your competition was training.
Gerry Lindgren took this quote very seriously.

I’m a D2 female runner. Our coach explicitly told us not to visit LetsRun forums.
