Where?
Some are sponsored, some aren't.
I'm going to be in Boston for the next 1-2 years (heading out there in about 2 weeks). Does sponsored mean they get paid, or free gear or what?

Boston has a lot of club teams. You'll have to look into them as far as talent goes, but I know there's a lot of good ones.
Sponsored as in free gear. Really depends on the club itself. Sometimes it's a set amount of shoes (3-5 pairs) along with a singlet, warmups, etc. Sometimes it depends on your talent level (like 7 pairs of shoes for the top runners, 2-3 for the slower runners). Some will comp certain race entry fees, etc.
It really depends on the group itself. I know New Balance has a group out there, along with BAA, of course.
Contact me if you ever move to the Deep South :-)
My guess is you are talking about the legendary Heartbreakers.
They will provide gear and entry fees. I am not sure about travel but you may get some if you are good.
What is great about them is that you aren't tied down to a certain coach or practice at all. It is basically you doing your own thing, but wearing their gear in exchange for free gear.
They will also totally hook you up with hours at the store if you want extra cash.
What is the threshold that separates a "hobbyjogger" from a "sub-elite" runner?
