How long should it take the 2:30-2:40 marathoner to recover from racing the marathon distance? Should he be able to resume normal training (high mileage, speedwork, etc.) the very next week? Or would he need some "extra vitamins" to have that type of turnaround?

It depends on how fit you are. Wardian or Kawauchi would not need 10 days of little to no running after a marathon. Others may need a couple months.
