So I have been coaching for the better part of the last decade and have been reasonably successful. I coached at a small coach and received honors from my coaching peers for my ability. I was the head coach and had parents for assistants, so really the entire program fell under my control. It was an okay situation but there was a limit to things that I could achieve. I want to go to a bigger high school to coach. I am very dedicated to improving myself. I am USATF and USTFCCCA certified with a plan to continue to the next level in each.
Which brings me to the question. I have an opportunity to switch schools, but I would need to be willing to settle for an assistant coach position. Is it possible to gear down from controlling an entire program to just taking on just a portion of the work without going insane? Has anyone else tried this? Specifically from high school to high school - high school to college is a different story and I'm not looking for those comparisons. I know this comes off as a bit cocky, but so be it - I am confident in my abilities and want to be happy what I am doing. With that said, I also don't want to find myself in a position where it feels like I am undermining the head coach when I am trying to coach. It does not have anything to do with my inability to work with others - I am more than happy to if they are qualified.
Am I better off holding out for another head coaching position? Did anyone find it more relaxing to have less responsibility?
