Says after NYC Marathon last year he quit running completely, gained 23 pounds, and took two months off. It was Andy Powell who got him back out training with the University of Oregon guys slowly!

Who?
What was his 20k time? Better or worse than his NOP shape?
That's hilarious. That being said, I'm happy he's back at it. I really hope he can keep building momentum straight through to the trials. He definitely has to be in the discussion for top 3 just based off of his 13.1, even if he hasn't put the full 26.2 together yet. I'll be rooting for him.
More carnage of the Salazar system...chewed up, then cast aside like trash. Great to see him gaining momentum again. Will certainly be rooting for him.
Quit running? He took a 2 month break.
Quitting running is when you don't train for years.
How do you gain 23 pounds in 2 months?

Starting to eat and doing crossfit?

2 months = ~60 days
1 lb = ~3500 calories
= ~1400 extra calories a day
no running = expending ~2200 calories a day
Eat 3600 calories a day and don't run.
Huge fan.
Why is this post worthy. He got 4th in a race that a bunch of nobodies that nobody cared about. Good for him

FYI: the 1lb = 3500 calories in indeed "rough math". it roughly works for awhile, but when losing weight or gaining, one's metabolism changes in reaction to the gained or lost weight, and the math no longer works. One does not gain or lose weight at the same rate forever (so as you get fatter/bigger, you burn more calories doing the same activities as before, so to keep gaining weight at the same rate, you'd need to up your caloric excess. Same with losing weight: you burn less calories doing the same actives as before the lighter you get, so you need to increase you calorie deficit if you want to continue to lose weight at same rate as you were initially losing (say, the first week).

He stopped running with the intent of no longer doing it professionally. I would say that is like quitting. It turned into a 2 month break because Powell got him back into running
this math is silly.

A "bunch of nobodies"?
Dathan Ritzenhein
Jared Ward
Matt Tegenkamp
Sam Chelanga
Fernando Cabada
Abdi Abdiraham
Tyler Pennel
Scott Macpherson
Luke Puskedra
Sorry to disagree, but this is one of the best field put together in several years, that is not an OT.
I quit for 2 years and only gained 13.
Is it sad that this is the best field in a very long time yet there is not a single person in this list who is an "A" class athlete. Kenya > USA.

Disagree. He's shown nothing yet to prove he is a contender at 26.2
Maybe he's more geared for the 10k.
