Hello everyone! I am a junior in high school and I have always been better track and field than I have a cross country but it is getting way too out of hand at this point, so I am reaching out for advice. In track and field, my main events are the 800m and the 1600m. My 800 meter time last year was a 1:58 and my 1600 meter time was a 4:37. I only ran the 1600 meter twice and it was in the beginning of the season so a sub 4:30 was nothing out of reach closer to the end. The true problem is cross country and anything longer than 1.5 miles. My best 2 mile time in track is a 10:40 which is not where I should be compared to my 800 and 1600. And in cross country this is even greater. My best 5k is a 17:57 and that was my freshman year. I do not seem to improve at all in cross country but during track season, I improve greatly every year. I know this is partly a mental problem but I am hoping you guys can help me out
I know that since I cannot hold a pace for longer distance it means I lack proper aerobic capacity, but I am in much better shape right now in cross country season than I was when I ran the 1:58 in track. It also confuses me how I am finishing at the top of our workouts and feeling absolutly great, but I just cannot pull off the same performace in races. I have ran faster in tempos in workouts than I have in some races. I know my aerobic capacity has improved since last track season because when performing tempos, I could barely finish at 6:20 pace in track, but I finish strong now at 5:40 pace. A significant improvement in time and feel.
During races, always after 1.5 miles. I feel like I hit a wall and my legs feel tired and it is a struggle to keep my pace up. I have tried taking the first mile much easier yet I still hit a wall at 1.5 miles regardless of initial pace. This slows me down the last 1.5 miles of a race. I finish feeling extremely tired but after about 5 minutes of catching my breath, I feel like I didn't even run a race, even though I was exhausted during the race. I am sore the next day however.
Here is a typical training week for me:
Mon- Longer aerobic day (45-50 min) @ 7:30 pace
Tues- Workout (Chosen by coach and this varies depending on the week.)
Wed- Same as Mon
Thurs- Another workout chosen by coach
Fri- Around 40 minutes at about 7:40 pace
Sat- Long run (10-12 miles) @ 7:45-8:00 pace.
Weekly mileage varies from 42-50 miles per week.
My diet and the way I eat is extremely well and I have proper hydration without overhydrating and I get the electrolytes I need throughout the day. I always stay healthy and have only been injured once my entire running career in high school.
The only two things I narrowed this issue down to is A) A completely mental problem that truly affects me in a race. and B) My longer aerobic days are not being done fast enough. Could also be a combo of both but I really want people's opinion on the issue.
I truly appreciate everyone help! Thank you so much!
